Question:

Help! A baby sparrow fell down 15 ft. I'm not sure if it is injured but how do I take care of it?

I found a baby sparrow on the ground today and it looks like it fell 15-20 feet from its nest. I'm not sure if it is injured but it was hopping around a little before I rescued it and placed it in a shoebox. Its eyes have been closed this whole time and its making a weird suckling noise (sort of like making an air bubble with your tongue). The baby sparrow has feathers and everything. I tried feeding it with some blended oatmeal and peanut mix, but it wont open its eyes or beak. Maybe its sleeping but I would had to see this poor fellow die on my watch. What should I do? Should I try forcing it to eat?

Thank you.

  1. Put the bird back where you found it. this is a Fledgling baby. That is how they get out of the nest. Either mom pushes them or they jump. they canot fly for few days but will hop and flutter. Mom and dad bird will come down and feed him. As long as there is no bleeding he should be fine. His eyes are closed because to him you are a predator. He is in shock. Put him back and watch hidden for a hour or two and the parents will hopefully come feed him. they will not recognize your smell on him so dont worry. Keep all cats and dogs away. If they do not come to feed in a few hours than call wildlife rehabber and take there. it is free. Until you can take keep him warm and quite put a little seed in a dish and little shallow cap of water. Touch and look at him little as possible. Good luck

  2. NO!

    DO NOT FORCE FEED IT

first if he is breathing check if its a steady ongoing brething

if it stopps a few times continuously you have to take it to a vet.

second feel around the wings to see if everythings in good condition

and if you don't know anything about birds please take it to the vet imediatlyy

  3. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:

  4. if you live in the UK call the RSPCA!!! if not the same happened to me and the RSPCA told me to hang a box out of a tree near the nest that the chick fell out of and the mother bird might come and feed it! but that unfortunately didnt work for me and i thought that i should have just tried to feed it and look after it the best i could! maybe try and dig up some worms and chop them up ( i know it seems cruel cruel but to save the biords life maybe its worth it?) and feed it to the bird like once every hour i think! but maybe seek proffesional advice! im not an expert and dont want to be responsible fro the death of a baby bird!
