Adequan? Legend?

If you have any experience with Adequan or Legend, I'd like to hear about them.

My trainer is giving my horse both and I really dint think he needs it. She really hasn't told me anything, I just saw it on my bill. I have no idea why he needs them.

Ok so about my horse. He is a 9 year old Dutch Warmblood in full hunter/jumper training. He gets worked 6 days a week with an average of 4 jumping days. I was not told he would need this maintenance. I am very concernd.

He is ONLY 9. Does he really need both. I know I should ask the vet, but I would like to know what you think about this.

Thanks

  1. Legend's is a once a year shot!!! My mare gets Legends every month, plus the oral H-A stuff! Adequan and Legends are matinence supplments and are used to help in the long run. They do help with repair the tissue but not by much. At first they give a large amount of Legends in order to get the horse started on the supplement and then they even it out, usually to every other month or once a month. And for your second question, as long as you are doing the work you are doing with him, then he needs the shots, if he needs them at all, once he is retired, he doesn't need them but if he has arthritis issues, then he should have an oral supplment of Glucosimine just to make him feel better.

Ask the vet! If you are doubting your trainer's actions then ask the vet and tell your trainer to hold on the legends shots until you get a verdict from your vet. You should always consult your vet BEFORE you put your horse on any new drugs!

Although to be honest, should you be jumping your horse four days a week? Most Jumpers and eventers only jump their horses one to two days out of the week. Jumping really puts alot of wear and tear on horses' joints and horses really only have so many jumps in them. If your vet has said that he doesn't need the shots, then I would limit how many days you jump him to one day a week and focus on other strength building excercises like fieldwork or flatwork. I don't mean to insult you or anything or tell you what you're doing is wrong but I would definately only jump your horse once a week!

  2. No one should be giving your horse anything without your permission.

Your not in Cape Girardeau MO are you? There's a bad bad barn there to be doing any kind business with.

  3. Both these are inecjectable supplements..... Adequan and Legend are injections given to a horse because they have bad joints.. i know that a vet percription is required to order both of these... but if its on your bill it should only be a one time thing.

Adequan i have never used but is given intramuscual and aids in lamness, joint trama and joint damage.

Legend i have used, its a shot that should be given once a year... this shot is given derectly into the horses joint to help the movement and helps joints that have been damaged... When my show horses reach about 16, I put them on this shot to aid them in the proper fuctunion of there hocks... as for my gaited horses, gaiting is stressfull on the horses hocks so when they show signs of being in pain i uses this shot to put the fluid back into the joint so it can properly  fuction... the youngest horses i had put on it was 7 so dont worry bout the age.

your horses is a jumper so these to supplements will help him alot... it will prevent alot of break down that can occur.

Your trainer knows what they are doing.

Even if hes only 9 he will be better off in the long run and will be able to jump longer

  4. I have never heard of anyone using both at the same time, just one or the other. You should definately check with the vet to  make sure it's okay.

  5. Regardless of whether your horse needed it or not, your trainer should have discussed it with you before giving it to your horse and billing you for it...I suggest you bring this up and demand to know why....furthermore I dont think you should be responsible for the bill and you may need to look into finding another trainer
