Help! Anyone heard of or use clear liquid glycerine with their horse? What results would you expect?

Hi. Its kind of a racing question since it is my fathers racing standardbred that his vet has reccommended be fed glycerine to improve elasticity. I just can't see how this product would work and would like to present some alternatives to Dad.

I have no idea what his parents were like but in my opinion his hooves are contracted (heels quite close and no flair), he is paddocked on irrigated grass and sand (not great dirt on my fathers property) and he is near racing and constantly shod.

Thanks for the tip to try pets/horses. will post there next.

  1. Okay lets really look at the horse hoof...Part of what you are fighting is genetic. What was the stud and mares feet like? The other part has to do with things like how much does your horse shoe guy know about what he is doing, what kind of ground your horse spends most of his time on (wet-dry,hard/soft), and what kind of feed you have them on. The horse market is a multi-billion dollar industry. A lot of it is additives for your horse to consume to make his life longer, healthier, better. Bottom line, start with the guy that puts the nails in your horse's hoof. You can't fix genetics. Glycerin is not something your horse would ingest if it was running wild. It is something that if you can convince people their horse could benefit from it - you make a market for it - thus make a dollar. Use your common sense before you start feeding it to your horse. They really don't need much of what people put in front of them to eat. But it makes the people feel like they are getting and giving their horse the best care. You don't say what your horses problem with his feet is so I don't know what else to say. Except check with your vet before you start feeding homeopathic remedies. Horses digestive systems are not meant to take a lot of things company's sell to their owners. Good luck.
