in a few years after art school, i'll be moving to rome. it's just me, and i'll have all the furniture i'll need, so all i need is a small, unfurnished apartment near rome, maybe on the outskirts of the city. how inexpensive can they get without being inhabitable?

  1. For a small apartment (let's say about 40 mq) in the outskirts about 600-700 euros. Anyway, it depends on the area and on the apartment.

Remember that bus connections are not really relyable here (always delay, trafic, you can wait very long), then I can recommend you to prefer areas connected by underground (very good, but of course more expensive areas) or nearby areas connected by train.

    You can search on

    http://www.portaportese.it  under Immobiliare, affitto, monolocale

  2. Go to www.Craigslist.com/rome

  3. Be very careful with looking for apartments on craigslist. There are a lot of scammers in the apt section. Since you are planning ahead, continue researching how to find an apt. If you can, it would be a great idea to go there and make connections with apt. rental agencies and possibly some other local contacts.

You may want to rent a temporary apt before committing to a long term rental sight unseen. They are more expensive, but if it is temporary you can budget that into your long term plan. You might also want to reconsider shipping furniture to Europe if that is what you are planning on doing. The cost of shipping may outweigh the value of your furniture.

The other answerer gave you great advice about moving there, especially regarding transportation. Some areas on the periphery have very unreliable public transportation. Another reason to go and explore as much as possible.

    Good luck with your planning!
