Question:

Help!?!? Baby Bird???

I went into my backyard and noticed this small bird on my patio. I kinda hung out there for a few minutes, and noticed it didn't go away. I went near it, and it kinda hopped away... I didn't know if it was abandoned bird or something, so i got gloves and kinda loured it into a box. The bird kinda flaps its wings, but can't fly. It's not exactly a baby, i think like a "kid". What should i do? Please don't say i'm cruel or anything, i'm just afraid the bird was injured, or abandoned, or something...

  1. if the bird has feathers, it is a fledgling and the parents take care of them on the ground.  please return it in the same area that you found it.  hopefully, birdgirl will show up and give you more instructions.

  2. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:

  3. I've had a young bird with injured wing..I'd say take it to a wildlife rescue place thats what i did! There should be one in the phonebook if not call the vet they should know of one!!!

    Good luck!!

  4. the mother bird may have been watching from a distance. you should not interfere with the natural order. Consider putting the bird back on the grass near where you found it. hopefully the mother won't be too far away and will coax the baby chick back. another option is that the baby is ill
