First off my cats are vaccinated for rabies. 2 of my cats had a 3 yr rabies vaccine in 2007 so they are not due for 2 yrs. My other cat is due for her vaccine Sept 10th of this year. She is the one that was chasing the bat but I'm not sure if she had actual conatct with it. One of the other ones (with 2 years to go for rabies vaccine) followed it to the basement too so I'm not sure if he had contact but I think he just followed it down. It all happened so fast. I'm just not sure how effective the rabies vaccine is in cats and if all 3 need to be vaccinated again immediately? Is there a threat when the vaccine is still current?

Are 3 year vaccines as effective as 1 year vaccines?

  1. The bat is not rabied, just confused.  I have captured/released them, unless they r attacking u, ur pets, u need not worry.

  2. If you're living in Australia, you're safe, as Australia doesn't have rabies.

Anywhere else, though, I would take precautions, although I would check her over for any cuts or scratches that may be recent and treat accordingly.

  3. Since your cat is soon due for her vaccine, take her to the vet to get the vaccine and ask these questions too. I believe your cats should be fine.

  4. what happened to the bat? you need it to know if it was infected. other wise it will be a guessing game and you will have to wait through the incubation period

  5. You need to call Animal Control. Anytime a bat gets into the house (here in the US) you need to call Animal Control. Bats are, unfortunately, the largest carrier of rabies. If Animal Control doesn't take care of it, they will tell you who does. If you can get the bat contained WITHOUT touching it, do so. But don't release it. It must be tested for rabies, because it doesn't have to bite you to transmit the disease.

Call your vet in the morning and ask what they want you to do with the cat that is supposed to be vaccinated next month.
