Question:

Help: Black specks on Tilapia Fillet?

I am preparing some tilapia fillets for dinner tonight and two of them have these little black thread-looking things on them. They're not hairs, and I am not sure if they're veins or mould or what. They're about 1/8" long at most, hair-thin, and located in a few random spots on the fish.

The fillets incidentally were bought at my local supermarket (seemingly fresh, nice and firm) and promptly frozen. Should I ignore, remove somehow or throw out the fillets? Common sense obviously tells me to pitch them but they seem otherwise fresh so..er...help!

  1. Nothing to worry about.  Probably a vein or muscle tissue.

You cook it, and it will be fine.

  2. We have seafood a lot, and I have seen those little dark lines in fish fillets before.  I sure they are naturally occurring.  Since you just bought the fish-I'm sure it is fine!

  3. They are fine.  It wouldn't be mold.  It is probably a vein or some other striation that is naturally occuring.
