Help! Car start-up mystery?

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic is having trouble starting up. Most of the time it starts right up and runs like a charm, but the last 6-7 weeks sometimes it takes too long to turn over when I turn the ignition. It will cough for an extra 5 seconds or so before finally starting up. Several times it never would turn over, so I had to try again and it started right up on the second time. This weekend it didn't want to start but it finally did and as I backed it out the driveway the RPM dropped so low it almost died. I shut it off before it could happen, but it was going to. Other than that it runs perfectly once it starts. It has trouble at all times of day, and I can't tell that it is any worse when the engine is hot or cold.

The mechanics can't figure out what it is! Here is a list of what I know the problem is not because we've looked at all these things:

Gas (duh. I keep it full)

Fuel pump (had a brand spanking new one put in--no result)

Battery (tested and fully viable)

Battery terminals (clean, no corrosion, well connected)

Throttle plates

Neutral safety switch

It has no error codes. There were no sudden and traumatic events to which I can tie the misbehavior. I've been great to this Jeep and it's been great to me; it has always received good and regular maintenance. Regular flushes, oil changes, filter changes, belt and hose replacements, inspections, etc. Just had new brake pads and rotors put on all. Tires in great condition. Help!!!! I love this thing and no one can figure out what is wrong!

  1. check MAP or MAF sensor, or O2 sensor... also your cats could be old and need to be replaced...these all should '_theoretically_" be diagnosed by the EEC-IV but compliance between 1996 and 2000 was sometimes debatable.

  2. "Things to think about & Check; Are you pressing the Brake Peddle Slightly when you back out? (Minor Vacuum Leak is Possible), Have Battery Cable Resistance checked, Corrosion does Migrate into cables Wires. Do a "Draw Test" on the Starter. Good Luck!

  3. i think you are saying that it cranks over but doesn't start sometimes. if this is the problem then have the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) checked to see that it is sending a good signal.

  4. Tune it up. Plugs O2 sensor and filters.

  5. What about the battery cables?
