Okay, well, I'm in high school and everyone wants me to choose a job. I thought i had it figured out. I love helping People, so i wanted to be a psychologist. I've also loved writing and I'm seriously working on a book. I really would want to be a psychologist and a writer, but i feel like somethings missing.

I want a job where i can be someone's friend. I want people to trust me, and to look to me for advise. I want people to remember the words i use.

I have a 4.0 and a bright future, but i don't know what to do with. Writer? Psych? Any ideas? please help

  1. I want you to be a reference librarian.

  2. teacher, nurse, social worker come to mind..

wife/mother but then not that many are cut out out to make all the sacrifices and hard work that entails anymore.

  3. Here's an idea.

Why don't you do a couple of informational interviews with psychologists. Different kinds: forensic, neuro-psych, child, etc. Psychology itself is a broad field.

Even if you have parents or relatives in the field it would be worthwhile to go through the process of seeking out other people . You might even get some help with getting into college.

Networking is fun and there are few people unwilling to talk about what they do. What the heck. It's not like you have to make a decision tomorrow.

As for writing, be prepared to work alone - as I'm sure you've found out. Some of us are cut out for that. Some are not.

Good luck. Would that I could go back to h.s. and start again.

  4. There are plenty of career exploration classes and books you can look into.  Ask the guidance office at your school or local community college.  They're surprisingly accurate!

  5. Well, even if you decide on something now, just about everyone changes their mind! I suggest you go to college and get your basic classes out of the way. A couple of years will give you a better perspective so you can pick a major but you still may change it after that. No one should be expected to know what they want to do while they are in highschool. You need to find yourself and then you will know what you will be good at and what you will enjoy doing. I'm 26 and still don't know! My majors have been....architecture, accounting, photography.....and I am now a Producer at a film studio. Go figure

  6. You do NOT have to decide now! That's the glory of being still in  high school. You can declare a major at university of psychology, but you can change it if you find that it's not really what you want to do. Don't be surprised if you start down one career path and end up on another.

Volunteering would be a good avenue for you to explore different paths, as well as giving you an outlet for your desires to help others. For the USA: VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).
