I would like to know how to claim land in the uk as I know of 1-2 abandoned plots of land.

Please help me I can't afford a pricey guide.

A guide I read said to wait 10 years however the laws have slightly changed.

Please Help; I'm confused

I would really appreciate links and guides, as it includes several forms to fill out that i need to send to the land registry.

Thanks.

  1. Abandoned or not - meaning, SOMEONE owned that land at some time or another! Maybe they are just letting it go back to nature! First thing you should do before filling out any forms,is to research the tax records and the land registry! The owners could have died, and willed it to relatives, but, somebody still has to own it!! England isn't THAT big a country where you can find "free" land! Believe me! somebody would have snapped it up long ago if that was the case! Do your homework first, that shouldn't cost you anything.  Don't put the cart before the horse!!

  2. The guide you read refers to something called Adverse Possession, and quite frankly there are easier ways. Go to the court clerk's office and ask about the properties in question. You can find out if they truly are abandoned or not by doing this inquiry - abandonment will show that no taxes have been paid in quite a while. Next, inquire a solicitor's help. You may be able to get title to the properties by just paying the taxes owed on the property. But, you will need a solicitor to do a careful Title Search to ensure that you don't end up with a mortgage on the property that was defaulted on by the previous owner. If you purchase the property by merely paying the back taxes, you take that property subject to any liens (payments owed to creditors who secured loans with that property).
