Help! Deal or No Deal? My 16 yr old wants to buy his friends used BMX bike?

The bike is "about" 3-4 years old. The Brand is Haro. His friend told him he wants $100 for it, he just put new brakes, tires & a handlebar on it (supposedly), and he just painted it. I know nothing of these bikes except they run in price from $250 - $500 plus. I want to make sure its safe, he's not overpaying, and the price is reasonable for the brand & year. His friend is saving for one that costs $500. Would it be better to go to a bike shop?

well, with the economy of today, the haro bikes do not keep their price as well as they did a bike would probably go for $80. I am looking at the bikes that Haro sold back in 2004-2005, and i have to say that they did not last as long as other bikes, i am actually suprised that it has lasted this long. Fortunately BMX bikes can do things that other bikes just are not capable of, others would just bend rims and break. With all sports of today, they all have a safety hazard and it is really all up to the parents. Pretty much riding a BMX bike and doing those tricks has about the same safety hazard of playing Baseball, footbal, rugby, or even mountain biking. I advise you to go onto Haro's website and check out their selection and see what you like better. Their site is www.HaroBikes.com. Ultimately it is all up to you.

it depends on the condition, also haro makes some bmxs that are really nice, and some that are more economy stlyle, the type that you would find at a department store or kmart. 3-4 years is a long time for a bike, and the parts may start to wear out. If he is going to use it to race bmx, or jump or go to skateparks then i would suggest buying a new one like his friend. Obviously the one his friend has isnt good enough for him currently

it is reasonable... if i was you i would bring the bike to a bike shop and get it double checked before you buy it
