My two comets have very slight tail rot. I added some more salt to the tank to try and help out a bit. Should I wait a bit to see if they get better or medicate them now?

  1. your tank is not cycled

they got finrot because of your waterconditions which are definitely not good

do daily waterchanges of 25% until you have 0 ammonia and nitrite

your tank is in the middle of the cycling process

here is an article for you to read up on what i'm talking about

    http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/...

don't use to much salt and only put back what you take out

    as example

if you put in 1 tablespoon to 5 gallons of water

and you have a 40 gallon tank, you would have added 8 tablespoons

if you do a 25% waterchange

you take out about 2 tablespoons of salt, that's how much you would put back in

but for now i wouldn't put anything  in there besides doing waterchanges

if you give them daily fresh water, they should recouperate soon again

  2. You need to make sure your water is really healthy to help them heal. you will also need to add an antibiotic. Check out this website. It's a goldfish forum. Post in the Help my fish is sick and Goldfish lovers will lovingly help you. http://www.thegab.org/forum/viewforum.ph...

    Good luck!

  3. Change the water.......

  4. If the goldfish do have fin rot, it is a bacterial disease that will need medication. As long as you keep the water quality high, it may not get worse, but it won't get better either, and if the fish becomes stressed, the fin rot will become rapidly worse, sometimes noticably deteriorating over the course of a day. Salt should help boost the fishes' immune systems, but will not cure it. Also, melafix is not the best medication. It is more of an herbal medicine that helps encourage fin regrowth but will not kill bacteria. If you choose to medicate, you will need a medicine that will fight against gram negative bacteria since that is what fin rot is. Your best bet is a medicine with tetracycline or a combination of maracyn and maracyn two. Tetracycline is the stronger medication. Before you use medication, you should do a water change and try to make sure your water quality is high.

  5. Do 20 to 30% water changes twice a week and continue adding salt for now... keep and eye on them their fin rot will repair itself and the salt is the most nonevasive cure for them. Also keep a check on ur water test it after ur water changes and make the proper adjustments.... if they still dont seem to be getting better after a few weeks ... them look into medicines but try the non evasive mesures first. Good luck

  6. use melafix and test the water

  7. Salt alone won't fix it, but it's good that you started treatment by adding some, we use Melafix here and usually see results pretty quick. You can get it at any pet store it's in a blue bottle. Its also all natural, its actually tea tree extract or Melaeuca. Its really easy to use; just add 5ml (cap is marked for measuring) for every 10gals once a day for 7 days. Then after 7 days do a 25% water change. The bottle says to continue treatment after the 7 days if nessicary but we have found that things are usually cleared up by then. We have had a lot of fish over the years and used a lot of products but we like this one the best. Good luck with your fish!
