Question:

Help! Heart problems?

This is really hard to explain. Every so often I get a slight pain in my chest area, more to the left side.

The pain isn't anything severe but sometimes makes me press my hand there to see what it is.

Sometimes my heart beats fast and occassionally feels like it "skips a beat" and also feels like I've skipped a breath.

I worry about a lot of things but this usually occurs when I'm not worrying at all.

Is it possible that it is the muscle in my chest? My dad said it is physically impossible to feel your heart hurting but obviously that isn't true.

I'm just curious to see what people think. Please don't bother saying go and see your GP.

I just turned 18 and no there is no heart conditions in my family.

  1. Eat less animal fat like meat, eggs, cheese & ice cream.

  2. Stress and anxiety can definitely cause what seems to be heart pains, or pains that feel like they are originating in the heart region; it's harmless.  It sounds like you might have an anxiety disorder, it may be just temporary or you may have been suffering from it for a long time and just haven't known it.  I believe the heart skipping a beat are caused by heart palpitations which again are harmless when related to anxiety, the shortness of breath or skipping a breath can sometimes accompany the pain or heart palpitations as well; like I said, it all relates back to anxiety and anxiety can occur or be triggered even when you're not worried about something, you might feel the pain which will trigger the anxiety and accompanying feelings.  Visit your doctor and tell him/her about the pain, and also ask him if he/she believes it could be anxiety and if it is, then what you can do about the anxiety.

  3. Are you under a lot of stress because stress can make it feel like you are having a heart attack.  I think you should see your family doctor and they should an EKG on you to see what is causing the chest pain and shortness of breath and palpitations.  If you are recommened to a cardiologist they will continue to do more testing on you.  Just because you have no history of heart disease in your family dosent mean your not at risk, everybody is at risk.

  4. Go to your GP!
