I'm about to start high school, i'm going to be a freshman and I have a question. I'm planning on trying out for the soccer team but I have a question, I'm not yet sure if I should play as a goalkeeper or a forward, when you try out, do you only try out for one position or can you try for a couple of positions???

  1. See if you can try out for more then one but be prepared to do only one. the best way to decide would be to either play which one you enjoy more, which one you are better at, find out which one has less players in that position - if there is only one goalkeeper they would need a second especially if you are a utility and can also play striker. But being a second goalkeeper means limited gametime as goalkeeper are not injured often (uless they play for Chelsea). One the otherhand striker usually (almost always) has two in a starting team occasionally three and one if it is a defensive team. but striker can also be the position everyone wants to play if there are lots of people looking to be a glory hound and take credit for all the goals.

  2. When you get a chance, ask the coach if you could speak to him privately.  Once you have his attention, tell him that you're very interested in trying both positions.

When I was in high school, our goalie was so much better than the rest of us, that for the first half, he played forward and would score a few goals for us, and then he'd play goalie and we'd try to keep the other team from scoring for the rest of the game for us to win!

    Good luck this year!

  3. Actually keep an open mind as with any coach

he will know what his needs are, and what position

you can play. If you play goalie, tell him so, if you

are a field player, he will know. Most importantly running,

and endurance, dribbling and passing, and shooting

skills are great to have. The Coach, if he is any

bit a coach, will take what he is given and assess

and use these tools to the best of his ability. Tell

the coach the positions you HAVE played, don't

tell him what positions you WILL play. You might find

you WILL be playing the bench, or WATCHING from the

stands if you tell him what to do.

  4. just ask the coach but their entirely different positions. i recommend focusing on only one position. choose the one u like most because not many goalkeepers get field time
