Question:

Help!! Hip pointer from running?

Hi

Cross country summer training just started last Friday, and this is my second day of running, but already I'm having pain in my iliac crest - the part of your hip that protrudes from your body.

I believe it's a hip pointer, and I've had pain when running since last fall during cross country, and I haven't gotten hit on my hip or gotten in a car accident.

I took Track season off, so it's had ample time to heal, but it's already hurting again...

could I have a fracture? and is there anything besides RICE that I can do to help? :(

Thanks in advance!! :)

  1. ...

Quite recently I came up with the symptoms of a hip pointer, but deduced that it was bursitis - an inflammation of a bursa that lays between the pelvic structure and the gluteus muscle that flows over it.

With 10 days to go before a major race, for me, someone suggested using a large foam roller.  Essentially, you lay it on the floor, and lay on it on your side, making a cross on it.  Then you roll your body over the foam roller, over and over - and especially roll the part of your body that's hurting.

Does this feel good right away?  No!!! It hurts like the dickens!!  But in time it does result in reduced pain, relaxed muscles.

I was able to finish a half-Ironman after using the foam roller for a week - and finished without any hip pain.

That was the solution for what I perceived by process of elimination was bursitis.

    Regards,

    Phil

P.s., this is not medical advice, just a description of what worked for me!
