  1. Most physicians are now shifting to Electronic Medical Records (EMR).  It saves a lot of time and money.  They enter all the patient's information into the computer.  Eventually the goal is to completely get rid of paper charts.  The information they need that is in a paper chart is either entered in the computer or scanned in.  This process usually takes about 10 min to do depending on the size of the chart and is done by a nurse.  They can look up a patients information without having to get up and look for a paper chart.  Some physicians can even do refills with the computer.  They send the refill information to the pharmacist via computer and the rx arrives at the pharmacy via facsimile.  I have a friend who was a medical transcriptionist and she can not find any work.  In the area where I live, almost all the doctors are using EMR.

  2. well i am one of those people.  i graduated in may and have had such a rough time finding a job.  a lot of places want at least 2 yrs of experience... and you need to be certified, which is a 4 hrs $200 test that you need to pass.  check out the medical transcriptionist website.  i hope this helps.

  3. I was a medical transcriptionist working from home for 13 years.

Many transcriptionists get their training through a course of study while others carry their medical terminology knowledge with them from other health related fields. You would need to get the terminology down, and then get started. Many companies want experience so there's a catch-22. However, doctors and hospitals may be hiring, and after a time you can work from home as many transcriptionists do.

There's some excellent information for anyone considering a career in this field in the website listed below. No affiliation with any school or products, just good info, including real job listings in coding, billing, and transcription.

They also have free listings in their directory for transcriptionists.
