Question:

Help! How much can diet, exercise help lower blood pressure? Has it helped you?

I am 38, not in bad shape, not overweight but my blood pressure is getting slightly high. The past 3 times, it was around 140-145 over 85-90. I have reduced my salt intake as often as able and exercise at least 4 times a week. I am surprised about getting high blood pressure, and my doc has not said anything about it yet, only the nurses commented it was a little high.

Please share your story or someone you know if they were able to reduce BP through life changes, not medicines. How long did it take to show a change? How much change in the numbers? If you were not able to change yor BP much, please share too. I want a reality check or what can happen.

  1. It was the reason I had to make changes again for myself. I am 33 and last year was the first time in my life my BP was high. My doctor Bluntly told me "you need to lose some weight, its not helping the BP problem" My whole family has BP problems including my brother, they are all on meds and I didn't want to have same issues. It took me some time to get myself straightened out and make life long changes but I knew I had to do it now before things got out of hand. My husband also had been told same thing. we started making changes in Jan of this year and have both lost weight and lowered our BP. I have it checked regularly and it has been very good for both of us since the weight lose and exercise.

    BTW: mine was around 145/95 and now its right around 130/70

  3. if  your doctor hasn't actully commented on it, your blood pressure isnt that high.. i think your nurse probably just means that its on the high end of the low scale.

    but a bit of exercise never did anyone harm and it is ment to  help lower blood pressure, just don't over do it

  4. The first thing you should realize, is that your doctor is the only person who is qualified to decide whether or not you need to lower your BP. If you start to feel bad, then you should call and be seen right away. Otherwise, keep the table salt down and read your labels for the sodium content. Garlic pills are a great way to reduce high BP. You should call your doctor before taking anything, even herbal, to make sure the dosage is correct. You can do more harm than good. Drink plenty of water, get rest, keep stress levels down and don't over exert yourself. My clients' BP always drops with diet and exercise.
