  1. 1.

    6-[5-(3-x)]

    6-[5-3+x]

    6-[2+x]

    6-2-x

    4-x

    2.

In question 2, mistake is on 3rd line.

    It should be:

    7-2(3-2x-8)

    7-2(-2x-5)

Here note that 7 and 2 are not multiplying with each other like you did in the solution you gave. Instead just open the bracket.

    7+4x+5

    4x+12

  2. 6 - [5 - (3 - x)] ← distribute the negative sign across the (3 - x)

    6 - [5 - 3 + x] ← now distribute the negative sign across the brackets

    6 - 5 + 3 - x ← combine like terms

    4 - x ← Final answer

    I see it now...

    7 - 2*(3 - 2x - 8)

    7 - 2*(-2x - 5)

    7 + 4x + 10 ← (Here's your error)

    4x + 17

We all have our faults and weaknesses.

At first I didn't see the error, my bad.

These kinds of problems are a lot trickier than folks realize,

because you have to be ever mindful of the polarity of the signs.

That's what the teacher is trying to convey here, so don't worry too much, ok?

Best of luck in your studies,

P.S. - You're welcome to e-mail me if this is not clear.

    I'll be happy to help.

  3. 6-[5-(3-x)]

    6-1[5-1(3-x)]

    6-1[5-3+x]

    6-5+3-x

    4-x

    7-2(3-2x-8)

    7-2(-2x-5)

    7+4x+10

    4x+17
