For each of the following types of disorders, indicate which individuals (male and/or female) can be carriers for the diseased allele. What are the carriers’ genotypes?

Note: You may use a dash (–) to indicate the Y chromosome where appropriate (For example: A- instead of XAY).

  1. autosomal refers to the idea that the gene is carried on any of the 22 identical pairs of chromosomes, where s*x-linked is carried on the X and Y chromosomes that help to determine the s*x of an individual

    Autosomal Dominant - A person cannot be a carrier for an autosomal dominant disorder, they either have it or they don't.  If they have it they will be Aa (most dominant disorders are too strong in the AA form and cause mortality) and without it they will be aa.

    Autosomal Recessive -  Males or Females can be carriers for an autosomal recessive disorder.  A carrier's genotype will be always be Aa.  If they have it they will be aa, and a person who is not a carrier and not affected will be AA.

    s*x-Linked Recessive - For a s*x-linked recessive disorder only females can be carriers because the recessive gene will be on the X chromosome and males only have one X, so they have it or they don't.  Female carriers will be Aa and males will either be A- without it or a- with it.
