Hurricane Felix has decided to wreck my vacation plans so Im trying to come up with an alternative, and it looks like Costs Rica will be spared, does anyone have any recommendations on a nice beach resort to go spend three days, near places to go rafting or canopy tours?

  2. Hey, Ryan.

Wow...we're heading to Costa Rica this week, too and I was wondering about FELIX.  We're going to stay in Playa Herradura and if you're interested here are some recommendations close to there that a friend of mine gave for me to check out (I just cut and pasted his recs from his letter - so it may sound strange):

"You really can't go wrong going any where around that area.  The place is very safe, don't be scared to venture out.  Try to get into the local feel, and don't stay shacked up in a Marriott.  There is plenty of stuff to do everywhere, do a canopy tour if you can find one; I am sure you will be able to find some info from your hotel.  You can go hang gliding south of there.  You can probably find a sail boat outing, the water life is incredible.  Of course surfing is great!!!  If you guys surf, head south to Hermosa for a day or so; but be careful the surf can get pretty big.

Be prepared to get a stomach ache after the first couple of days; bring pepto bismo or something like that.  The food is incredible, but they don't put preservatives in their food, so it takes a couple of days for your system to get used to it.  Stay away from water unless it is in a bottle (most of it is).  Drink lots of beer (pilsner, imperial, bavaria); try some Guaro shots (but be careful that stuff is like fire).  Eat lots of fresh fish, fruits and vegetables.

Places to go:  Jaco (just South) for a 1/2 day or so; just to see the crazy surf town; lots to do here.  Tarcoles River (just North) is a must see, the river is full of GIANT crocodiles; people feed them from the bridge.  Hermosa (South of Jaco) great surf and some nice hotels right off the road).  Manuel Antonio (good bit South of Hermosa) is a beautiful National Park, you can do some fantastic nature walks/backpacking, kayak some rapids, hang glide, canopy tours; wildlife everywhere (VERY BEAUTIFUL).  STAY OUT OF THE TOUR BUSSES!

If you want to go far North you can venture out to the Guanacaste Peninsula.  This area of Costa is a good bid different than where you are staying.  It is much more off the beaten path, fewer people and more relaxing area.  Except Tamarindo which is a really cool laid back beach town.  Good shops, restaurants and hotels.  Whether you go here or not, I highly suggest you get out and about.  The roads are much better down there now and very easy to get around; just watch out for the bus drivers!  You need to get a rental truck or SUV.  South of there is a town called Nosara; buried in the jungle is a hotel called Villa Taype; great place to get away, but not much around.  There is a little French bakery right at a fork in the road that is out of this world."

Well....Hope that helped you as much as did me!  The main resort there is the Marriott Los Suenos.

  3. I just came back from Guanacste and I highly recommend The Occidental Allegro Papagayo hotel. There is plenty to do regarding canopy tours etc.

  4. Hola,

I am manager of Hotel La Perla Negra on the Caribbean Coast just outside of Puerto Viejo.  Please go to our website www.perlanegra-beachresort.com to see photos of our resort.  We have canapy tours, river rafting, tours of the Bribri Indian village, and many other tours available.  When are you planning to come to Costa Rica and how can we make your vacation perfect?

    Suzanne

  5. my family and I went to guanacaste (northwest), We did the canopy tour that was in the jungle- it was good. Then we went to the volcano, not the active one-too far, but the other, Im sorry I cannot remember the name. However there was a canopy tour there that dwarfed the other. This one was up on the side of the mountain-not for the faint of heart. There is a resort there also, that you can pay to enter for the day-recommend the volcanic spa treatment/mud bath. I have traveled alot and we loved costa rica more than any other place on earth!

  6. go to jaco man, that the place you can spent those days
