Question:

Help! I've weaned my children and I'm still producing milk!!?

I have a 5-year-old son and a 2-year-old son. I breastfed both of them, the first one for 15 months and the second one for 23 months. With my first son, my milk never dried up. He was three years old when I got pregnant with my second son and I was still producing milk. I never became engorged, I never leaked, but my husband discovered that I was still producing milk (enough details there, right?). Now that I've weaned my second son two months ago, I'm dealing with the same thing - no engorgement, no leaking, but definite milk upon suppression. My doctor wants me to take bromocriptin but I've heard the side effects can be terrible and that it is rarely prescribed anymore for that reason, and because it has a high failure rate.

Does anyone have any other suggestions??

  1. I am currently pregnant with my first and am praying that i'll be able to breastfeed-that being said I don't have experience with this but maybe you can pump and donate it?  We have an organization locally that takes donated breast milk, you have to go through an exam etc...but maybe that would be worth it??

That's all i've got sorry!  And I personally would be very cautious about taking the medication, especially if you ever plan to have more children.  Good luck!
