I am refinishing a wooden desk with metal hardware that is kinda grimy and old. I am not sure what kind of metal it is. What can I use to clean it? Does anyone know of any home remedies that might work? (I was thinking vinegar might work? But I am afraid to try without asking someone first)

  1. Most old oak desks had brass plated steel hardware. It cleans up well with just about any good metal cleaner and a bit of steel wool. My oak desk had recessed hardware and when I finished cleaning it I just sprayed it with brass spray paint with a semi gloss clear overcoat. I think it was TREMCLAD paint. Turned out quite nice.

  2. If you can remove the hardware, take them off. Soak them in acetone for a while then wipe them off with a sponge. Use soft brush or toothbrush for crevices.

  3. Try some never dull.  You can get it at an automotive store or hardware store. It works great on brass, silver, copper, chrome etc etc. I use it alot on brass and silver
