Question:

Help! I changed my cats litter box and litter!

I changed my cats litter from A&H Clumping litter to Worlds Best Cat litter and at the same time bought a cat box (Omega Paw Rolling Cat Box) from a disposable one! We recently adopted a kitten so wanted to make sure he'd use his litter box first and he was healthy before we bought a sturdy long term box. Now three weeks later we got the new Omega box and WBC litter and he doesn't use it! Any suggestions? I have no more of the old litter sadly.

  1. you will have to go back to old litter, old box, and old place.

slowly mix in new litter with old, adding more new each time for several weeks until it is all new.

then move litter box, a little bit at a time, again over several weeks until it is where you want it.

then place new box next to old box for a few weeks. once old box is removed, he should use new box.

  2. your kitten is just not used to all the sudden changes! give him time, he'll adjust to it. have you tried placing him in the litter box? that way, if he didnt know where it was, he'll know now and hopefully realize that its his new litter box. good luck!

  3. Unfortunately, the cat probably doesn't like the new scent of its box. You will need to get some of the old litter and do the transition thing with the cat. Also, you can show it where the new box is. You may have wasted your money on the new box though...

  4. it's just too much change for the poor little guy all at once.  Follow the instructions of the other answerers and see if that helps.  In the meantime, here's a great Pet resource that may have some good tips as well...

  5. That many changes all at once has confused him. I personally don't like the WBC litter, but if you want to use it, or Feline Pine, which is also a natural product, then you need to do one change at a time. Go purchase your old litter, and put it in the new box in the closet. If he makes a mess out of the box, put it in the box and show it to him, he will get the picture. Once he's using the new location with the old litter regularly, then use half old and half new litter for awhile. Slowly take out your old litter and replace it with the new brand and before you know it, he will be using the new litter in the new location.

You could also consider locking him in your room until he is using the box as he should. I had to do that to my cat when she was a kitten.

  6. Frank is right. Cats can freak out if too many changes are made at one time, and that will make them not use the litter box.

The only thing I would add, is when you start adding the new litter box "seed" it with some of his poo. That will get his scent in the box and encourage him to use it.
