  1. It would help if you actually pasted the questions for people.  Here are some things to think about for each question:

    1. How did Egyptian religious beliefs reflect their society, lifestyle, and geographic location?

Religious beliefs often try to explain what happens around people, as well as answering questions about life and death.  Think about the difference between their religious beliefs and religious beliefs where you live.  What is different?  How does that relate to the way they lived, and their location in Egypt by the Nile river.

    3. How did the institution of the pharaoh evolve, and what was the nature of the pharaoh's power through the Old Kingdom period?

How did pharaohs come to be?  What power did they have at the time of the Old Kingdom?  Were they elected, for example, or did they earn or inherit their power?  Why did people consider them worth following?

    5. How did the invasion of the Hyksos influence the later development of Egypt?

e.g. what new ideas or technology did they bring (e.g. bronze weapons)?  What was the reaction in Egypt?  How did it change things there?

    7. What was society like in Egypt and Nubia in terms of both social classes and gender roles

Was there a big divide between rich and poor and men and women?  Did women have a voice in society?  Could they rule?  What roles do rich and less well off (different social classes) play?

    9. What was the significance of the cult of Osiris?

Think about how the cult of Osiris is important in Egypt, including the large role it plays in the burial ritual and what people believe happens after death.

  2. You can look up Egypt here:

  3. Too bad you can't do the even numbered ones. They are a lot more obvious in the outline.

Seems like the answers to the odd ones are found more in the chapters themselves. Are  you sure you don't have to read the entire chapter?

    1. How did Egyptian religious beliefs reflect their society, lifestyle, and geographic location? You are going to find that piecemeal in the outline.

    3. How did the institution of the pharaoh evolve, and what was the nature of the pharaoh's power through the Old Kingdom period?

Small states with semidivine rulers (5000 B.C.E.)

States begin to emerge by 4000 B.C.E., small kingdoms by 3300 B.C.E.

    The unification of Egypt

Strong Nubian realm, Ta Seti (3400-3200 B.C.E.)

Egypt, large and prosperous state by 3100 B.C.E.

Menes at Memphis unites Upper and Lower Egypt

Pharaoh, absolute ruler and owns all land

At first only pharaohs are mummified (Old Kingdom)

    5. How did the invasion of the Hyksos influence the later development of Egypt?

    Turmoil and empire

Period of upheaval after Old Kingdom (2160-2040 B.C.E.)

    Middle Kingdom (2040-1640 B.C.E.)

    Nomadic horsemen, Hyksos, invade Egypt

Using bronze weapons and chariots (Egypt does not have)

    Captures Memphis in 1674 B.C.E.

    Causes revolts in Upper Egypt

    7. What was society like in Egypt and Nubia in terms of both social classes and gender roles

    Social classes

Egypt: peasants and slaves (agriculture), pharaoh, professional military and administrators

Nubia: complex and hierarchical society (can tell from tombs)

Patriarchy in both but women have more influence than in Mesopotamia

Women act as regents, like female pharaoh Hatshepsut

Nubia: women serve as queens, priestesses, and scribes

    9. What was the significance of the cult of Osiris?

    Cult of Osiris

Brother Seth murders Osiris and scatters his body

Wife Isis gathers him up and gods restore him to life in underworld

Becomes associated with Nile, crops, life/death, immortality

Osiris judges the heart of the dead against the feather of truth
