I've had Norton Antivirus 2004 but got a virus anyway. Updated to the 2008 version, bought the disc, but the computer won't let me install it beacause it says I have another version installed. When I try to uninstall the previous version thru "Add/Drop" it says it can't remove it. How can I manually remove this software? I'd appreciate your help.

  1. the only way is going to add or remove programs and uninstall the old one.

  2. Go here and select the Removal Tool for your installed version:

    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsg...

You do NOT need to format and using add/remove does not completely remove all of the entries.

  3. You should format your PC. It will erase everything you have there including the files with the virus. Or have you tried scanning your PC with your antivirus. You can also try Mac Os X or Linux. They are not compatible with any virus and it is almost impossible to create one since   they were made with Unix.

    Hope it helps!!

  4. and once again a fine example of people who are clueless as ever trying to answer questions they know NOTHING  about

Norton 2004 hmmm think the thing was up to date at all ??

you don't uninstall norton through add or remove programs

you use a norton antivirus remover

    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsg...

also do your self a favor and do not load any norton product on your pc , use either Avast or avg , both free and a h**l of allot better then Norton

  5. Here is how you do it.  Restart your computer in safe mode. And when you are in safe mode you can do just about anything you need to your computer.

When in safe mode tak off your older version then manual check your computer for anything resembling Norton.

Then restart your computer and install your new antivirus software.

  6. This is a common problem with Norton products. Once they are installed an infection disables them and then it doesn't work AND you can't uninstall the stupid thing!

Since it is so common, Norton has created a removal tool.

NOTE: this program will uninstall ALL Norton/Symantec products on your computer!

BTW, most people call all infections a "virus". The biggest problems are with spyware/adware. Anti-virus programs do NOT detect or remove these infections. You need to use the right tool. I suggest the following:

    Superantispyware

    Malwarebytes Rouge Remover

    Malwarebytes anti-malware

    Threatfire

    spyware doctor starter edition

    All available for free from:

    Good luck

    LKB

  7. looks like thats a pretty bad virus. try to run an online scan with either trend micro's housecall or microsoft's one care. they are both free nd they are both one of the best out there. if that doesn't work contact symantec online through chat. its free nd they will remove norton for u. hope that helps.
