I have a water table and all other materials I would have to bring in myself. We can't make bird feeders because of peanut allergies.

  1. You can make bird feeders with dairy butter and seeds instead of using peanut butter.

Bags of dyed feathers like you find at a craft store to make their own birds on paper or on toilet paper tube bodies with pipe cleaner legs

Strips of tissue paper cut into feather shapes to put on paper/cardboard tubes.

    Various bird shaped cat toys

Bird calls of all sorts to show the different whistles -these could probably be borrowed from a local hunting club or bird watching group, and many are large enough to be kid friendly to try

  2. I would use dramatic play where (as mentioned above) the nest would be this table where they can feed baby birds (others). Perhaps many regular room fans blowing air and the music would be bird sounds. Let the children take this where they want (as birds) You could do this outside using actual trees as areas for seed or baby birds....let them assign roles and create the "rules" I am sure there will be a whole lot a flappin going on!!,  The sensory part would be feeling seed, flapping wings, moving air, bird sounds etc.

  3. You can make bird feeders with crisco instead of pb.  You can also do lacing- yarn and circle shaped cereal or place old bread, bagels, rolls etc into a mesh bag and hang outside.

I've used birdseed in the sensory table and they enjoy it.  I tend to add colorful objects for sorting and such since birdseed are dark colors.

Birds like corn.  I've purchased corn on the cob (squirrel food) and had the children remove the corn off the cob and then explore.

  4. Maybe senses - light and heavy....

    birds are light like -

                             feathers, cotton wool, bubbles, silk

    not heavy like -

                             stones, wooden block, clay,

Categorise into baskets labled heavy & light.

    Covers senses - Science

    Also language and maths

  5. bird feed or feathers

  6. Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, feathers, funnels and shovels.  Have students locate items in the materials that relate to birds (ie. small bells, mirror, an actual "squeaky bird" toy that cats play with, etc...).

    Hope this helps!

  7. what about a bowel/bag of feathers and/ or birdseed to go along with the water table.
