Question:

Help...I just but my daughter back in public school...?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

My husband and I recently seperated and I was a stay at home mom, homeschooling my 7 year old. The problem was that I was I had to get a job and could no longer just stay home. I put my daughter in public school and she is doing ok, i guess. I recently started working from home though, and would like to take her out of public school.

The only problems are the lack of money...before she was using the Abeka program, and I really can't afford this on my own income. Also, my husband, who was once very supportive of homeschooling in saying that he will fight for custody if I withdraw my daughter from public school.

I really do not know what to do. Is there really any reason that I could lose custody of my daughter if I chose to homeschool her again?

Anlso, is there any online reasorces for free/inexpensive homeschooling ideas?

Thanks all in advance.

  1. Isn't it amazing the overwhelming mentality that the government knows what's best for your child more than you do?  Anyway, the ACE curriculum is another christian program that can be used for homeschooling.  It's much cheaper than ABEKA.  In our school, we use ABEKA, but use ACE for students who need to catch up in an area or make up a failed class.

  2. Some local churches will offer assistance with homeschooling resources. There are some up my way that offer home schooling classes etc.. There is one I pass by in Limerick Maine. You cannot lose your child due to home schooling as long as there is not a performance change from one vs the other. He can fight for custody, but that is his choice and has little to do with the court.

Feel free to message me. I have a couple of local resources that may be good leads in providing information.

  3. Honestly, I would keep your daughter in public school. No offense, but a parent could never be as good of a teacher as someone who is trained and works soley for that purpose. And ontop of that, it is a much better social experience, and your daughter will learn how to cope with life and the people around her better. So just keep her in public school, it saves you money, and it give her friends and a good education. AND you don't have to stress about custody problems. =]

  4. Public schools, regardless of what is often said can be quite good for children. What makes public schools bad is the lack of parental concern. Obviously you pay attention to your children's education and should continue to do so.

Public schools help socialize your children and allow them to interface with the real world much better than Christian private schools or home schooling does. Sure, anyone can name exceptions, and your children may be among them, but, in general, children who have been home schooled or sent to Christian schools fair much worse when going on to public high school or college.

As for socialization, sometimes giving children choices makes them able to make the best ones. I offer this from the experience of having raised three wonderful children who are now successful, happy, productive adults.

  5. Every state has different laws, but I don't think choosing to homeschool your daughter is justification to lose custody (if, in fact, you have full custody).  It sounds like your ex is just using the school issue as a tool to manipulate you.

With working at home, do you honestly feel that you will have the time to teach your child effectively?  What are your reasons for wanting to withdraw her from public school?

Socialization is vital for children, so if you take her out of public school, you have to provide other opportunites for interacting with her age group.

If it is the curriculum you are concerned about, you can work with her at home to make sure she is getting the concepts, since at her age, what she is learning about reading is vital for long-term academic success.

    Best of luck to you!

  6. You should see if your state offers an online charter school.  Online charter schools or virtual schools are free.  They will sometimes even pay for supplies and internet connection.  Some charter schools will give the child a computer or laptop with printer.

  7. I think with the stress of the separation, that it might be a good idea to keep her in public school.  She will be with other children her own age and will have a lot more activity to help ease her mind about the problems at home.  Home schooling is great, but I don't really think now would be a good time, besides you are stressed yourself and may not be able to devote the amount of time that's necessary for teaching.  So, I think she should stay in school for her benefit.

  8. Choosing to homeschool your child is not really a just cause for the judge to decide to take custody from you.  He is just using that to scare you.  Sounds like he has control issues.

Anyway, if she is doing well in public school why not let her stay for a year to see how she likes it?  After the year is up, ask her to decide.  I know you're mom and you want what's best for her, but this is a difficult time for her.  If she is doing well, leave her there for now.

  9. i can't imagine you husband would support it then renege...not cool...not sure how it would stand up in court cause he supported it all this time...sounds like a control thing...what about child support..tell me your getting it!!

i homeschool and have since grade 1, we are now in grade five, i have never paid for a curriculum...i do a lot of resaerch online for homeschool stuff

    http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skill...

also bbc, national geographic, nasa, how stuff works, history channel are all good resourses

you just have to commit to the extra time of doing your own research and lesson plans

good luck and don't give up...homeschooling is awesome...everyone we meet comments on my childrens intelligence and SOCIAL skills....thats right excellent social skills ;)

  10. You dont need to buy a curic - I looked into a few but ended up doing my own.  the library and the internet are great for free resources.  You need to look at what your daughter is doing or has done and 'follow on' from that.  I am a home educating mum of 4 and this is what I did with my eldest as he was already in school.  I made a list of all the subjects he needed to learn and bought the next stage up books and it escalated from their. amazon is a great place for books.

and those people who say that hs kids are socially awkward are just stupid and rude - how can they comment on a topic they know nothing about.

    GOOD LUCK

  11. Keep her in school- do you really want to put her education at risk by home schooling while all of this drama is going on at home?  Plus she needs to make friends- learning doesn't stop with the books, it is also experience, interaction, and being exposed to other people/ cultures.

  12. Madam, you seem to have  enough problems of your own and to worsen that you want to homeschol your daughter. Leave her there, there are millions of children  who have  never seen a school or a homeschool. Go and get that job you need to put bread and butter on  the table for both of you. This not a a perfect world and you would not fine a perfect School either. The world  is a better teacher; The only thing it cannot give  is a School leaving certificate or any other documents to help you find jobs. For that reason a public School  is the best for your child.

  13. I think he would have to prove there was something wrong with the way you were homeschooling her. Is she keeping up in public school? Is she behind her classmates?

If your ex is just being a jerk and she was homeschooled while you were together and had no problem I think any judge would realize he's just causing problems and being bitter.

Can't help with the finances, I don't know enough about homeschooling. Good luck in any case.

  14. I would be more than happy to provide you with links of interest about homeschooling.  I will change my personal settings to allow im's for the next hour that way you can get a hold of me if you would like.

  15. Your daughter will benefit more if you keep her in public school. If you homeschool her, she will be cut off from other children her age. Sure, you may bring her to places, or she could play with the neighborhood kids, but in the end she will be a sheltered, socially awkward girl.

  16. For free homeschooling materials, resources, curriculum etc take a look @  http://www.booksamaritan.com

P.S. Common sense says that you're hubby would have a pretty hard job objecting to you now homeschooling your daughter given that he agreed to it in the past. I'd imagine he'd have to prove that you had suddenly become totally incapable or some other such nonsense!

  17. Home Schoolers are actually highly Educated by Home Educators.

There are many Home Educators training their own children with a vision to use their talents, and gifts to become entrepreneurs or leaders in this world. These HS kids are finding out that learning is life long and it is fun. It is not just memorizing a bunch of facts for a test. A Home Educator has a vested interest, to give to their own child, the tools necessary to succeed in life. Those in the outside world of Home Education seem to be threatened by the success of Homeschoolers. So much so that it is now not even mentioned when the HS kids win the Spelling Bees and Geography Bees. Look it up. Public Schools are being put to shame.

The worst thing that you could do would be to recreate PS in your home. If there is a conflict at home, in the family, your child would be comforted in the place where she is most loved. In a class of 15 to 20 other peers that have only 1 adult to supervise. Public school is viewed by many in HS ranks as being a baby sitter. Only a mother has the eyes to see what may be happening in the mind of her own child. A detached teacher is distracted by other obligations to meet requirements placed upon her so that she will not be fired. A Home Educator schools her children out of love, not for a pay check.

PS Parents are now asked to catch up their kids at home, either nightly or over the summer, so PS parents are now homeschooling their kids at home anyway!! What was the point again for kids attending a PS? Memorizing facts is not learning! NO ONE will ever care and love your child the way you do. I attended my HS group last night of 200 families. By the way that is not the only HS group I belong to. I belong to locally 4 groups that I am active in. AND about 74 yahoogroups across the country, that specialize in specific subjects. If there is a book you would like to use, to school your child, chances are that a yahoogroup is formed on that subject or book.

Also, realize that much of what PS does is repeat information from year to year, while in HS a child will learn all there is to know about a subject before progressing on to the next stage, making it an illusion that the HS child is behind the PS child. There is no repeat of information in HS the child learns it, not memorizes it. Here is an amusing story, At the time this took place, I had my HS 5th grader, out performed a PS 9th grader in a math competition of doing problems in your head. And by the way, in the HS ranks my child at the time was not one of the advanced in math either. The 9th grader was astonished that he was beaten by a HS 5th grader. HS is a higher level of education, and as kids are finishing up their home education to enter into the work force or college the business men and college boards are taking notice. (HUM, by the way did you notice that the PS and HS kids were together in a competition? I wonder how that happened?)

OH, there is a thing called church. Many HS kids are connected to a church where they have friends. I guess if you HS you are really NOT on an island after all, as the PS advocates would have you believe. Another thing to address:

NON-Socialization in the HS ranks is only a myth that is spread by the ignorant people that have no knowledge of the Home School World. These same people claim to have an authority on what they speak about by making an observation on an individual family that they themselves may or may not have first hand knowledge of. Who would ever want to socialize a child around other kids that have no adult supervision or vested interest in the child anyway? OH, I forgot those groups are called gangs now. Kids that are socialized with out adult supervision? HUM. Get my drift, may as well compare PS to gangs if you are saying the HS kids are not socialized. Besides, Home Educators do not wish for their children to be socialized with the PS kids, no offense, but the PS kids are not desirables to be around. And I always have a hard time at Birthday parties to limit the party to around 16 kids that are the same age as my child, oh by the way, all the kids we invite to our birthday parties are HS kids too! There is no lack of HS kids around.

I have only encountered one HS mom in all my years that actually did not have a college degree. Most HS Educators are former PS teachers too. So what does that tell you? I'm a 8 year veteran of HS. I have a BA of Graphic Design hanging on my wall, and my husband has his own BA on the wall too. After working in my field for 5 years, I came home to become a helpmeet to my husband and to raise Godly Children. As a Home Educator, I have come to realize that all my years spent in the PS system was a waste. AND it put me into debt and kept me out of the work force all at the same time. Something that I will prevent for the future of my children.

Once your children reach the High School years, you can begin schooling them toward earning college credits. CLEP is at the library in books and CDs, there is a HS CLEP yahoogroup too. As my oldest enters 7th grade, I am placing the tools before her for a higher education. As she completes the Science, Spanish, History and Grammar curriculum I have chosen, she will be ready to take the CLEP tests. Next will be the math programs with CLEP to follow. As she completes her High School years, she will earn enough credits to enter into an accredited college of her choice as a junior. However, she has decided at this time to pursue her career first, and as she comes to need credentials behind her for her entrepreneurship in later life will she seek a degree on a part time basis. My other children still have a bit of time before choosing their career paths. But they will be guided by my hand and given opportunities to experience a variety of different things before determining their course of study as they enter the High School years.

First, my advice to you is to Pull up your States HS guidelines. Usually your local HS groups will have the information listed. You would have to go with your state guidelines for HS.

There are many free resources to school off the internet, with out the box stuff.

    Use your local library!!

Write up your own Education Plan Guide per child. You can do this over the summer. Join a local HS group in your area.

AND in the mean time here are just a few free web sites:

I can not possibly list them all here, but this should get you going.

And remember if you like a specific book, then check the yahoogroups for a loop to join.

  18. Not only would I reconsider my options, but I would talk to my own divorce attorney before making any major decisions regarding my daughter at this time.

Keeping her in public school will be o.k. while you are trying to make ends meet.

    Good luck, and God bless.

  19. If you want to homeschool your daughter local churches often have a program. Or in some districts (I know in mine there is) there might be a homeschool program through the districts (so u take the state tests) that have teachers u meet w/ once a month, classes, and if u want u can take classes (band, electives, computer etc) through ur local school

  20. Having grown up in the pubic school system myself and also having know a few kids that were home schooled, I ask my self why would you want to home school your daughter in the first place? I don't understand why someone would want to do that to their kids? School is a great place for a child to meet friends and become socially active which will really help them later in life. Also I notice from my own experience the children I knew that were home schooled seemed to be behind all the kids that were public school as far as knowledge...not intelligence because that is an individual basis, but knowing things that they should of at that age.  Pubic schools teach kids multiple subjects all day long and they get to interact with all their peers and teachers.... this makes for great comraderie and teamwork that will help them in their adult life at their jobs..... and being home schooled I cant  see it giving a child all that experience....also if your child will be going to college after school I would suggest keeping her in the public school system.... high school prepares a child for college and you already have the friends and know what to expect... a home schooled child will get eaten alive at  college.... just the atmosphere alone and the pressures of drinking and partying alone will be hard to cope with, but a child would of already went thought that in high school and would know how to deal with that situation or at least be ready for it....so ask your self why??? I don’t see any benefits of home schooling except for someone who is a selfish parent who wants to spend more time with their child at the child’s expense!

  21. Good grief!  Some people who answer must live under a rock somewhere...only coming out to attend public school.  Sorry.  Had to get that out of my system before answering your questions.

I would think that wanting to homeschool your daughter would be a positive thing in the eyes of the law.

You can homeschool using only the library and internet sites.  Someone has already listed many places online to learn.

Don't listen to the people who think that homeschooling is a bad thing.  They have not been informed nor socialized..probably because they were in public school and it messed up their brains.
