Question:

Help! I just got contacts, but things are still blurry?

I just got contacts about a week ago and my vision is clearer than without them, but sometimes I feel like things are uneven or my vision goes blurry when I blink. I have astigmatism in my right eye, but I thought wearing contacts (toric kinds for the right) would keep this from happening? Do I need a stronger prescription or something?

  1. I'm guessing you didn't randomly go out one day and pick up a box of contacts along with a jug of milk.  More likely, you went to an eye doctor and got a prescription.  Assuming your eye doctor knows what he's doing (he probably does), then you don't need a stronger prescription.  Contacts take time to get used to them.  If you are unhappy with your contacts, make another visit to your doctor.  Explain what is going on.  Perhaps you will need to try a different kind.  I have astigmatism in both eyes, but I wear regular daily soft.

  2. As with any new prescription -- especially if this is your first time wearing them and one is a toric, it can take a bit for the eyes to actually adjust to not having to force themselves to focus and strain.

Listen to your OD. If it's been a week or two already, and you haven't had a follow-up, it might be worth asking for another. The doctor can check to make certain the lenses are fitting well, and that your eyes are adjusting well.

  3. you may have put them in the wrong eye. I have done that before, if thats not it they might be shifting when you blink. Try putting them in again

  4. I feel your pain!!  Best bet is to go back to your eye doc, and have him check you with them in.  Good luck.

  5. Hmmm. Definitely go to your optometrist and ask him/her your question(s), but I was in a similar situation to yours. It eventually turned out that in ONE of my eyes, the prescription was .25 too high, and that's why when I saw certain objects (especially up-close), it became a bit "distorted" and 3D like. So basically, I was seeing things strangely because one of my eyes was prone to focusing great far-distance and the other was great on near-distance. (I discovered this by covering one eye and then the other while wearing contacts.) But when you combined both of my eyes together...yikes! =O Major distortion time!

But make sure to clear this up w/your doc ASAP! I wish you the best of luck in the future ( =

  6. I would advise you to go back to your optometrist and consult him/her again. You may or may not need a stronger prescription.

It is actually normal for vision to be blur after a blink. However, does the vision clears up after a short while? If it does, then it can be considered as normal. Then it is considered as alright. However, if it still remains blur after a short while, then something is wrong with the prescription.

Wearing toric contact lenses cannot guarantee sharp vision as compared to wearing spectacles as there is always lens rotation in your eye. Experiencing blur vision with toric lenses might be one of the indication that the rotation is excessive.

I would still advise you to go back to your optometrist to have another eye examination. There is possiblility that you might need a lower prescription compared to a stronger one.
