Hello all. I need help with party ideas for a Surprise 65th Birthday Party for my Mom. She has been in semi-bad health for 5-6 years now and she has been retired for a few years now and has been counting the days until her 65th Birthday so that she can get her medicare. So it has been a joke for the past few years that when she turned 65 we would have a here I come Medicare party for her so I am really going to do it she just dosent know it. I am planning a party but I need ideas on things I can do that would fit the theme but I am at a loss. I have no idea what I could do that might be fun and fit the theme. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

  1. idk how like "into" pop culture she is, but if she likes watching access hollywood and stuff like that you could treat it like a red carpet event, with her walking (or wheeling, if applicable) in on a red carpet and stuff. just an idea...hope everything goes well

  2. Have a Medicare pinata for her party, it's fun and unique http://www.pinatas.com/Pinatas_s/1.htm

  3. get back issues of AARP and place them all around even hang em alonside a pic of the hite house (sorry I dont have a doubleu on my key board). Thats all i can think of...sorry.

  4. Do a Back when I was skit.  If you have family members that are close to her age as some point in her life and have them do her life story.  When she was 5 who was president, what did she do, what was popular, what did she want to be when she grew up and how much was gas?  Got the idea from the Cosby show years ago.  It would be fun.  And then have certain people wish her well.  It would be fun.  Food, skit, and conversation works everytime.  If you have pictures of her decorate the table with them.

  5. Get a picture or a copy of a medicare card and blow it up, I'm sure if you go to the social security's website they have what one looks like, and decorate with that hang them around the party.  They are usually white, with blue and red around the edges.

Then decorate in those colors and carry them over to the balloons, streamers, etc.  Have clusters of those colors in balloons, tablecloths, napkins, etc.

You can also get the bakery to do a sheet cake in the theme of the medicare card and have them put her name and birthday on the cake.  Have them do an exact replica of the card into the cake, tell them you want the cake to be a medicare card!  Put her name on there, her b'day, etc.  Obviously you don't want her social security and personal info, just her name and b'day and make it a sheet cake to look like a medicare card.

Then you have the same things hanging around the party.  Copies of medicare cards.  You can even get white foamboard and edge it in blue and red and put her name and b'day on it, and then put xx's where the other personal info should be or just fake numbers.  She would get a big kick out of that.  Or you can make a copy on their website and go to a copy place, blow it up to as big as you can and glue it to the foamboard and hang a few around the party area, she would get a big kick out of that!!

I would stay away from canes and wheelchairs and things like that, especially if she has health problems, even if she is looking forward to the medical help, no one wants to see that and think about those things in their future, even as a joke.

You can get some white Chinese take out containers and make them first aid favor boxes for the guests.  Fill them with some real first aids things and fake first aid things. Go out and buy some band aids and put one or two in each box, get some mints and mark them as aspirin, or get some of the travel packs and include them in the boxes, be creative, you can include chocolate, for when you just need that caffeine fix, etc.  Make it a funny first aid kit like Hershey kisses and hugs, for those days when you just need and kiss and hug to make things better,  a band-aid for when you really do hurt yourself.  A lollipop for the days when you need to just suck things up, a paper clip for when you need to hold things together,  a packet of sugar for when you need some sweetness in your life,  a battery when you feel like you need to be recharged, things like that you can put in there along with the reasons.  They'll get a kick out of it.  Don't forget to decorate the outside of the box with first aid, or first aid for the soul, something like that.

You can also decorate with white streamers only, it will look more like medical gauze then like streamers!  If you do that, don't add the red and blue like on the edging of the medicare card, just go with the white to look like gauze and tape it down with band-aids!  Go to the dollar store to get the cheapest ones you can find so you're not spending a fortune on these medical things that are going to waste.

You can go to the dollar store toy section or to a toy store and look for a doctor's bag, fill it with florist's foam and put flowers in there and make that the centerpieces for the tables.  Check kids dr kits and even if you have to buy the whole kits, you can use what's inside for decorating at the party. You can make the other things in the kit peek out of the bag for an added touch.

I hope some of these ideas help and that your mom has a great party and a very Happy Birthday!
