Alright. I'm going into 8th grade. My afmily currently doesn't have any pets. I am DYING to have one. I am an ANIMAL LOVER. How do I convince my mom to let me have a pet other than a fish. I will definitely take care of it. I should show her I'm responsible enough, but how do I do that? If I want to have a serious talk with her what are a few things I should say to make her know that I am capable of caring for a pet? 10 points to longest and most reasonable answer...

  1. Start small... like a pet rat, or a lizard. Something that can live in a cage. The reason i say that is your mom may not want the responsibility to tend to the animal when you are at school.

A good animal to start with are:

    Hermit crabs

    Bearded dragons

    Rats

    Leopard gecko

    tortoise

    etc..

Pick out an animal. Do TONS of research on it. Find one that you can afford to buy EVERYTHING it needs. Save up the money, print off the caresheets and show your mom exactly how to take care of the animal of your choice. tell her you have the money. All you need is a ride.

This will impress mom, especially if you don't bug her about it for a couple weeks.

  2. Try asking for something small first. Like a gerbil. Show her how much you love it and take care of it. If she sees that you can handle something bigger, maybe she will get you something like a cat or a dog. If you never get to that point try to ask your neighbor if you can walk their dog or take care of it while they are on vacation. Also doing things on your own is a good way to show responsibility. Like clean your room without asking and stuff like that.

  3. The first thing that you want to know is what type of pet are you looking for. Your answer to this question to this answer will most likely dictate the direction of the conversation between your parents and you. If you have never owned a pet before, it is best to start out smaller and easier. As you gain experience with the 1st pet, maybe go for a second. As far as pets go, i WOULD NOT suggest a hampster. They are very messy, they are hard to clean up, they bite, and they produce something called musk, which is a very strong odor secreted my most small mammels in certain glands. musk smells very bad and therefore not the best choice for a 1st pet. I would honestlly recommend a rat. Now, stick with me on this one. Rats, contrary to popular beliefe, are very clean animals by nature. They "clean up" messes and dont produce such a strong odor. They are very loving and caring pets, which can be trained to do several tricks, believe it or not. They also are very loyale, and it s OK to keep just one or two at a time. They do not need to be kept in larg groups. Another pet that you might want to consider is a tarantula. Now before you say no, listen to my reasons. Tarantulas are EXTREMELY low maintenece. As long as you feed them once every 1 or two weeks, they will do fine. Just make sure they have fresh water and moist soil and that animal willl be one happy spider. I currently have a chilean rose tarantula which i bough froma store about 2 years ago. She is a big spider, but has never bitten me or any one else in my family. I clean her habitat ( a 5 gallon fish tank) once every 2 weeks and she does just fine. They eat crickets and are believe it or not very docile. One thing you have to understand is that this is stilla spider and therefore can bite you. Whichever pet you choose, make sure you do enough research on it before brining the idea up to your parents. Use the facts that you have learned about your pet hopeful in your discussion. Show your parents you are responsible by doing your chores, doing well in school ect. Show them you have the financial resources to take care of your future pet, and see how they take it. dont be pushy or rude, as this could ruin all of your chances.

I hope this helps, and good luck. Pets really are a joy to our lives. Take good care of it, and it will thaank you.

  4. Talk to your mum about what kind of pet you want. Compramise with her. Start with something small and work your way up. For example, show her how well you take care of something like hermit crabs. Make sure you show her how responsible you are- that the crabs always have fresh water, salt water and food, that you wash out the tank every week, that they have lots of things to play with and that you let them out of the cage twice a week and give them salt baths. Make sure you keep showing interest in them.

Then get something harder. Like rabbits or guinea pigs. Do exactly the same. Show her how much you care for them and don't forget about them.

Once you have done this, if you want something like a dog, walk dogs at the local pound or do some volenteer work at a shelter. Take care of friends/family's/neighbours dogs/cats/pets for a weekend at a time. Show your mum how well you can look after it. Or offer to walk peoples dogs.

If it is a dog take him/her on a walk every day and prepare him yummy meals! (and make sure he/she has water!) Spoil him! Show your mum how much you enjoy having a pet and that you won't lose interest in it after a while.

The best thing is to not give up!!

Really hope it all works out!

Ps. Thanks for choosing me as 'best answer' for the acne question. :)

  5. Try and borrow a cat or dog from a family member/friend etc. And keep if for a couple of weeks just to show your mum you ARE capable of taking care of such a big responsibility. If that doesn't work then go for something like a mouse or guinea pig, if you can keep that alive then talk to your mum aboout coming to an agreement. Best of Luck!

  6. if your dieing to get a pet you should maybe do some research and probaly go to petstores and breeders and shelters and check out the animals before that you need to come up with a great argument at why you are able to own a pet resposibly. first you might want to pick out the type of animal and then plan every little detail out for it and then go to your parents and tell them the details and ask them if they are not going to let you own an animal than maybe you could ask your parents to allow to borrow a friends pet and show them that you are responsible enough for one. and if you havent had a pet then you should start out small like a gerbil or hamster or mouse or rat and at the very largest get a rabbit but for a beggining pet owner birds ferrets and dogs and cats are not the best pets. I hope you get a great animal and enjoy it!
