Help. I want to get contacts, but I know nothing about them. Do they hurt? Can they get stuck in my eyes?

How much do they cost? Are they uncomfortable? Are contacts hard to take care of? I really want to know if they can get stuck in your eye and if you can be unable to get them out. Can you sleep in them?

  1. Contact lenses are great, Ive been wearing them for 4 years now and I find them to be great, Theyre not uncomfortable though it may feel kind of wierd at first you get use to them, they become as easy as putting socks on, and no you cant sleep with them in, unless you want to wake up with red eyes in the morning

  2. Your eye care provider can answer all your questions. There are numerous types of lenses and you will have no problem finding the right one for you. NO, they won't get stuck in your eyes, they are not real expensive and not hard to take care of. YES, there are lenses that you can sleep in and even some you can wear for up to a month and then throw them away and use a new pair.

  3. Contacts should never hurt you, providing they have been fitted properly and that you take proper care of them (cleaning/storing, changing to a new pair as directed, etc.).

Contacts cannot get stuck in your eye to the point that they can't be retrieved. A contact cannot slip behind your eye...if one gets lost in your eye, it cannot go any farther than your eyelid. Most people can usually get them out themselves when this happens...you just have to try to flush it out with some eyedrops. And if you can't get it out, an eye doctor always can.

Some contacts today are night and day, so those kinds can be slept in. I really don't care for those myself...your eyes need time to rest and get some extra oxygen, so it's a good idea to leave the contacts out while you sleep.

Pricing on contacts varies widely. They could be as little as $10 per box, and on up into the $100s from there. It all depends on brand, how long they can be worn for before changing to a new pair, whether or not they are for astigmatism etc. The cheapest are usually the daily wears, then weeklies, bi-weeklies, monthlies, and yearlies (most expensive). If you have vision insurance, your insurance may even be willing to help you cover some of the cost of your contacts. You could also talk with your eye doctor, maybe tell him/her what kind of price range you'd like to try to stay within per box of contacts...he/she might be able to find you something suitable and affordable.

Your eye doctor will train you in all the aspects of having contacts if/when you choose to make an appointment to be fitted for contacts. You'll be shown how to insert/remove them, how to clean/store them, etc.

I love my contacts; they are really comfortable. Normally I can't even tell I have them in. It can take some people's eyes up to 2 weeks to adjust to wearing contacts, but after that it's usually smooth sailing.
