  1. conley39 is right, most things will be open on April 25. You will not have a problem with closings on this day.

  2. While the 25th is a holiday, not everything will be closed. For example, the Vatican Museums are opened: http://mv.vatican.va/3_en/pages/z-info/m... (as shown, it was opened this year)

Many businesses will be closed, but there will be places to eat. In addition to the main tourist attractions that are opened, you could go to see the civic ceremonies and processions that mark the day.

Other places that will be open include the Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Doria Pamphilj (very good art collection), Castel Sant'Angelo, Barberini Palace, Corsini Gallery, Borghese Gallery, and the ancient Rome sites.

You could just go exploring and try to find as many of Rome's fountains as you can - there are close to 300 of them. Or take an excursion to Ostia Antica or Tivoli. You could also catch an early train to Naples and take the ferry to Capri for the day.

  3. Absolutely right. Sorry pal ...

Also, be wary of so-called "ponti" ('bridges') between holidays, while in Italy: April 25, 2008, you be on a Friday, which means that most shops will also be closed on Saturday (and on Sunday, as usual).

I suggest you do your shopping  on Thursday 24th.

Also, remember that May 1st  is Labour Day in Italy and in most of continental Europe (not the UK).
