Question:

Help!!!! Is my dog gasping or is it hiccups????!!!!!?

My dog will start kinda gasping almost , or it looks like ten hiccups in a row, then he'll swallow and go back to normal. He has been carrying his toys around...drinking water and playing fetch but we don't know if he has stuff caught in is throat or what is wrong. PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!

It's probably just the hiccups because when my puppy got stuff in her throat she coughed a lot.

It may be 'reverse hiccups' - try pressing gently just behind his ribcage on either side - this can interrupt the nerve impulses that cause them.

If that doesn't work right away, he may have something caught in his throat, or have a collapsing trachea, and needs to get to the emergency vet right away.

He may be getting to excited when playing fetch.  Slow him down a little and see if that takes care of the problem.  Make sure he doesn't have anything stuck in his mouth if he is gasping for air.  Toys can break and get stuck in the roof on their mouth sometimes.

If he continues you will need the vet.

Add:  Burrdocks!  He needs the vet to remove it from his throat quickly...take him to emergency.

How old is the pup.

If its a puppy they get hiccups a lot and its nothing to worry about!

Sounds like something called a 'reverse sneeze'.  I know it doesn't sound like sneezing but this is the name for it nonetheless.  Is your dog flat-nosed like a pug or boston?  It can happen to any breed but is very common among those kinds of dogs.

This is a really normal way for dogs to try to remove mucus from their airways.  It SOUNDS 100x worse than it is, and it's much scarier for you than it is your dog.  It will help your dog get back to breathing normally if you cover his nostrils so he is forced to breathe normally through his mouth.  My little one does better when I rub her throat too.

Do a quick search on "reverse sneeze, dog" and you'll find a ton of information.
