Help Joining The Merchant Navy?

hey people :)

i am 16 and just about to finish high school in the UK

i am joining the army when i am 17-18 as there has been a few family problems which has stopped me joining sooner

so im thinking about joining the merchant navy for a bit , can you join for a year or 2? or does it have to be a set ammount of time?

also how do i go about joining and are any gcse's or anything required?
