I am looking travel site that sells really cheap airline tickets to Montreal for a weekend. Also which do you think is better to travel by plane or Amtrak? Does Amtrak travels to Canada during the evening hours or is it only morning? Please help. If you have any suggestions please leave them.

  1. flyzoom.com

really good fares between montreal, newyork, and the uk.

    best i've seen out there.

air canada has cheap flights on their website, but not all of the time. fly zoom is sort of like a jet blue or a southwest type of deal, so all the tickets are generally inexpensive.

  2. Have you checked these sites yet?

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=Ch...

And this one also as far as Amtrak is concerned?

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=am...

  3. If you want a real cheap fight take one to burlington and then Montreal is just 21/2 hours away by car.

  4. I think it is always better to travel by plane than Amtrak...but it's way more expensive. The cheapest flight that I ever saw this year was from Air Canada http://www.aircanada.com/en/home.html When they have deals, it was CDN$99 one way...but when you add both ways plus taxes and the crazy airport taxes&fees [another $100 or so] the whole trip cost about CDN$300+.

I have never traveled by Amtrak but I always check out its prices whenever I am looking to travel. It seems that they only have one departure...in the morning. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentSer...

It is sooo long on the train [close to 11 hours] that is because they hit every little town in the New York State. My friend has taken it and he says it is one long ride. The cost is low...around US$127+ round trip. This price is close to the cost of a bus ticket. [US$129+ round trip]

I have taken the Greyhound. http://www.greyhound.com/home/ They usually have 5 departure times and sometimes more depending on what day it is [for example, they have more departure times on Fridays] I took the night bus @ 9:30pm and got in around 6 in the morning. [They also have a midnight bus arriving around 8am] The bus ride takes about 8 hours+, it all depends on what towns they stop at and how long it takes at the border. I prefer taking it a night, less stops and it gives me more time to visit.

As for flights, I usually use www.expedia.com to see what  airlines flies to my destination and then go to each and every individual website for that airline. Sometimes the airline itself  offer cheaper prices than sites like expedia, orbitz etc. To get low prices, I have to search, search, search.

For future travels...ever heard of travelzoo? You can find really good deals. Click on Top 20 deals and Last Minute Travels. For US deals: http://www.travelzoo.com ; For Canadian deals: http://www.travelzoo.ca  I subscribe to a newsletter to both sites, where they send me a weekly newsletter on the Top 20 deals. They have pretty good deals.

  5. try "Ocean 2 Ocean Travel"

    http://www.ocean2oceantravel.com

Go to the "hotels page" and on middle right look for "traveling on a budget"

I think Amtrak is nice, but the cost of the food ads up pretty fast.   If you are not in a hurry than Amtrak is ok.

  6. You should look into air buses. I am not sure where they fly out of and land but i knew someone that got a ticket for less then fifty bucks. Also some people on the air bus got tickets for less then 10 dollars!

  7. The best deal I ever got on a flight from NY to Montreal was $110 one-way... usually its around $180+ after taxes.  That was of course from JFK airport (NOT newark or LGA).  If you can get a deal, take a plane- its only about 60 mins.

-Greyhound usually floats around $80 one-way, although I swear that in August I paid $30 from Newark, NJ to Montreal (stopped and changed busses in NYC - essentially the same thing.  About 8 hours.

-Do NOT EVER take Amtrak- it is a horrid ride.  Service is atrocious, dealing with customs and immigration is unbearable - on both sides, and there are frequent delays.  I've done the trip 4 times, and the avg length has been about 12 hours.  And it's only once a day - leaves NY at about 7 am, and leaves mtl around 9 am.  Don't do this if you can avoid this.

-Unfortunately, I think the best option is still to drive.  Tolls aren't too bad, and petrol is cheap in the states- plus immigration is a breeze when youre by yourself (or don't have any foreigners with you).

-Look out for cheap rides.  Some people may be going up there anyway and will offer to share a ride.  There's also specialised busses- I know there's a Jewish run bus that does the route for $50 a way.  Ask around- although its always easier to get TO New York than to get to Montreal.

-I guess you could also try hitching.... that might be your cheapest option.
