Question:

Help Me, I don't Want To Abandon My Child?

I have a part time childcare voucher from the department of transitional assitance(Welfare Office) and I will be working 15 hours a week and will also be taking 3 classes at my college, (the classes are going to be online.)

Do you think that because the classes are online that this would interfere with me keeping my childcare voucher? I prefer taking these classes online so that I will not have to put my toddler in daycare any longer than 15 hours a week.

For instance, I can do my studying while my toddler is at home sleeping as oppossed to going into the school for classes and putting my toddler into daycare.

I have gone in for 2 semesters at my college but now I am taking online classes from my college, so the college is accredited and legit.

The work online is very hard, I need at least 3 hours each class to get the work done. Just because my classes are online does not mean I get to sit back, recline and watch television, I really do have to work and study. Online classes are harder than classes taken in person.

Will online classes affect my voucher? If so, then I will just forget about the voucher and seek other alternatives because this voucher is not worth putting my toddler in daycare Mon-Fri 7am-6pm.

After all, I want to get off of welfare so a part time job at 15 hours a week should help me get off of welfare, so this should not be a problem.

  1. You have the childcare voucher for when you have your parttime job right? then you baby will stay for those hours and your online classes shouldn't matter at all i don't think. just check and make sure with your case worker. Good Luck glad you are trying to better your life and you babies !

  2. Your classes shouldn't affect your voucher, which I'm sure you will still use while you are working. The goal isn't to keep your child away from you - it's to allow you opportunity to be gainfully employed and provide for you and your child. Taking classes is great, so you can further your education and find a more stable and better paying job. The fact that you are able to take online classes is an added bonus. You can still be with your child at the same time that you are learning. Additionally, it doesn't drain the resources of the "system" because the childcare facility uses your voucher as payment for the time your child is there. If your child isn't there as much, the system doesn't have to pay out as much.

I worked from home for several years so my children could be with me while I worked. Although it wasn't always easy, it certainly is do-able and the best option for me. You deserve a pat on the back for putting forth this effort and taking your child's best interest to heart! Good for you.

  3. In minnesota at least you can only have your child in day care while your working or going to school. They dont want people taking advantage of the system. Hopefully your state is like that as well. You can get a few hours to do your home work and studies plus work. Talk to your office and see what there rules are. I agree at home college is harder then being there. You have to be very disciplined and motivated to do it. Good for you and good luck with everything. You sound like a good mom for not wanting you child in day care to long and going to college. Anyone who says anything mean prob doesn't understand what your going through. Your not abusing the system your doing it for the right reasons.
