ok, before i start here are my specs

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 iP35 mobo

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz)

4GB OCZ DDR2 800MHz

Zotac 8800GT 512MB DDR3

500GB Samsung Hard Drive

Hp dvd-rw drive

620W coolermaster modular PSU

Vista Home Premium 64 bit

HP vs17e 17"monitor

now i want to overclock my Q6600 to 3GHZ, now can someone give me steps/instructions to overclocking the Q6600 from 2.4GHZ to 2.6GHZ, 2.8GHZ and 3.0GHZ. i want to overclock in steps as i read its safer.

thanks

  1. As far as I knew thats not possible to go to 3.0 on a Q6600 but to start you need a MOBO that supports extreme overclocking, then its just steps in the bios. Should be strait forward if you have a good MOBO-

  2. You are aware you void the manufacturer's warranty of 3yrs and could shorten the life of you cpu right?

  3. Yeah, just pop into the BIOS and overclock 1 step at a time. Your mobo manual has the info. If you start to do massive overclocking you'll need to change voltages and manage heat - don't go that far :)

  4. In the BIOS, change  the FSB:RAM ratio to 1:1. Raise the FSB to 300.

If you can boot into windows download this

    ftp://pi.super-computing.org/windows/sup...

    and this

    http://www.almico.com/speedfan435.exe

SuperPi will test the processor for stability, run the highest test and use Speedfan to monitor the temperatures of the CPU.

For a Q6600, you should be watching for 65 degrees.

Once you've run this for an hour or so, and you're sure the temp is not further increasing, go back into the BIOS and raise the FSB speed by about 20MHz. Also change the FSB:RAM ratio so the RAM speed is closer to 400MHz DDR (e.g. 3:4 or 4:5). Run the tests again and keep going, if the temps get too high or the computer will not boot, you can just clear the BIOS and start over.

    Have fun!

  5. hi kamran

why do you want to overclock your rig when the processor is a decent model and your other hardware is of excellent quality, however before you begin any overclocking remember this will probally void any warranty on the p.c,s hardware,so you have been warned

in the past when i have overclocked i have allways used a desktop utility and my favourite is nvidia,s n-tune(http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05....

this allows you to overclock your cpu and graphics card without having to enter the bios, and it has a automatic overclocking feature which will find the safest clock speed for your cpu and gpu

using a algorithm built into the program it runs a series of tests and then increases the speed then runs a benchmark to test the settings for stability,it may restart a few times during the overclock

you have a choice between a coarse tune(20 minutes) and a fine tune ( 3 hours) and you can also manually overclock however this is not recommended

if the motherboard and cpu can run safe and stable at 3ghz then n-tune will acheive this and the settings will then be applied everytime windows starts

overclocking via the bios is also a option however its also alot more risky, stick with n-tune,you wont be dissapointed

              any problems let me know

                         good luck kamran !
