  1. You have to make him use manipulatives until he gets what adding means. This means get him some blocks and sort them out.

Two blue blocks plus two green blocks.  Have him count the answer out.  Then show him the flash card.

  2. According to Piaget, an expert on how kids learn, kids at his age can only keep one thing in their mind at a time, so trying to remember the attributes of 2 and 3 and combining them is a real challenge. Most kids his age can tell you one more, as in "If you have 2 cookies and I give you one more how many would you have?". Beyond that they need lots and lots of practice with concrete objects. Give him something like beads or pennies to work with. Frankly, this is another example of struggling with something that would be a lot easier if you waited a while, but if you want to give it a try use real things.

  3. well 1 you cant do it your not a teacher when he goes to preschool they wont do it too! in pre-k and 1 grade maybe  not pre-k but i know 1

  4. try this website

    http://www.starfall.com

    this is a reading site

i dont know about any math sites though

    check google

  5. Congratulations for wanting to work with your nephew, he is very lucky!

I would first start out making sure he has counting down really well before moving to addition.  This is the developmental sequence that should happen.  You might be saying, he counts fine . . . check and make sure that he is counting, one number for one object.  (If he is . . . great he can start working with basic addition . . . If not, this is not a big deal, just practice with him.  He'll get it!)

Once he's got one-to-one correspondence down (one number for one object), then work with manipulatives and games to start a foundation for addition.

No offense, but flash cards are boring.  Work with manipulatives (hands-on materials) with him.  Give him a reason to add.  (How many more bowls do we need for ice cream if I have two and there are three of us?  If I have these three apples, how many more to make five?)  These types of questions.

Check out LeapFrog Math Circus DVD from the library (this covers a lot including: counting, addition, subtraction, skip counting).  Kids watch a cartoon that they enjoy and starts teaching basic math concepts all at the same time.

One toy that I love that my kids adore is called Monkey Math by Learning Mates.

To be really honest with you, if he can't "add" and remember facts, this is hardly going to place him behind in kindergarten though.  Certainly, extra help will only benefit him in the end if you put things on his level and make it fun, he will have a foundation in school that will keep on giving!  Great job!

These are just some ways that kids enjoy and have fun while learning . . . we all learn better if it is fun.

  6. kinder site .com

  7. tey m&m's get a big bag and go maybe like 5red one + 3blue

ones= 8 brown ones and try that most kids like mnm's and that helps with colors too or skittles then put them in the same order 5red +3 blue and tell him if he puts the right # of mnm's on the table for the answer he gets to eat them

  8. You need to make it fun and sing songs that add one more or take away one each time such as 5 Little Monkeys or 5 Green Speckled Frogs.  they have games with pictures where they will have 2 flowers + 1 flower equals - and then they find the actual number to put the puzzle together. My 4 and 5 year olds can do that game.  I hope you're planning on getting him into preschool next year before he tackles kindergarten - I'm a very strong advocate for preschool!

  9. This site isn't all about adding, but you can count things on it and it is a very fun site for the younger children. I am a childminder and the children I care for love this site. http://www.poissonrouge.com

  10. 5 years old is way to young to understand the concept of adding  numbers together.  This will come later, maybe 6 or 7.  The other answers were right in saying use concrete objects such as blocks or m&ms to start with, though.  But I would wait another year or so.  Simple counting and number recognition are great goals for this age.

  11. You never want to start with flash cards. He needs hands on. Using his current toys, rocks, anything around the house will work. Place tangable items in front of him to count by one-to-one correspondance. This means to point to each item and count one at a time. Then using the same concept, take items away and have him subtract. Even in the beginning of kindergarden, manipulatives are used for adding and subtracting. Most important, make it fun. Do it often. For a snack, give him a plate of fish crackers. Have him count them, then take some away. Have him figure out how many are left.

You don't need to buy anything. Every home has enough "things" in it to use as manipulatives (hands on).

Most important, make it fun. Don't make it seem like you are trying to teach him something, and he is more willing to learn.

  12. I agree with the first two members!!! Both good answers.
