Help! My 15-month old won't eat anything but certain foods?

My son will only eat oatmeal, fruit, graham crackers, applesauce, applejuice, finger biscuits, licorice (which he gets from the barber when he holds a good head), yogurt, and pizza. But his favorite is pizza. If I try to feed him vegetables he will chew it up like he's going to eat them and then spit them out. What do I do?

  1. He'll eat it when he's hungary.  Give him a little bit of food he likes (but don't fill him up), then he'll still be hungary, so give him a veggie, if he won't eat it, at his next meal, give it to him again (he has to eat it before he gets what he likes).  He will eat when he's hungary - at this age you develope the food habits, so what he will/won't eat is because of you.

  2. my son is the same way, the best way to get them eat veggies is to put them in a sauce or mix them with something he likes. sometimes my son will only eat things like chicken or rice if I put plum sauce on it, so try condiments that may help. My son's main stumbling block is veggies, and things like rice and potatoes. and thats what I do to get him to eat them. also, another good idea is to give them their main course when they're really hungry they're more likely to eat whatever you give them. If its a bad day or whatever, try making sure you have very nutritious staple foods that he likes, so that you can give him those instead.

For example, I buy halal chicken hot dogs for my son as his main meat at dinner if there's nothing else for him to eat, or he has a hard time with other meats.

I always keep soda crackers and whole wheat crackers so that he can get grains at lunch if he's being picky.

and when he doesn't want milk (which he doesn't seem to drink anymore) I make sure he has yogurt in the morning and cheese slices at lunch.

I'm going through the same thing, but I'm just happy that my boy has a healthy appetite and doesn't often get snacks between meals, so he's more likely to try more things.

  3. Get a juice extractor and add good veggies in with his juice like carrots and spinach.  If you put hamburger on pizza, make it with veggie burger or add things like corn on it.  Sometimes you just have to hide the good stuff.

  4. get him started on smoothies and add vegies to it.

sneek it into other foods (make it small so he won't notice)

  5. that is a kid for you they wont eat some food one day and then that will be the only food they eat the next that is normal my daughter wont drink anything but milk out of her bottle but she will drink out of a sippy but she wont drink milk out of a sippy it is a kid and how they understand diff thing

  6. try cutting down on the heavy meals so he gets real hungry boil some carrot sticks ............and chewy foods hey get finicky when they are teething

  7. He sounds normal to me.  He is eating and as long as his weight is good, he is doing fine.  Try not to stress on the situation too much.  Also, offer fresh veggies with dips.  Like baby carrots with ranch dressing or katchup, even chocolate sauce.

  8. Your job is to offer your child a reasonable assortment of healthy foods, HIS job is to eat if he is hungry -- or not eat if he isn't.

At his meals, sit him at the table with a several different foods --  which may include one or more of his current favorites, but should include at least one food that he used to eat.  And include some other simple foods that he would probably like, given the chance. (Simply cooked meats and veggies, toast (plain or with fruit spread, peanut butter, cream cheese, etc.), mild cheeses [he likes pizza, will he eat string cheese?], low sugar dry cereals, pasta, etc.)  No sweets, no junk -- at least not until he's eating better. Let him eat what he wants.  If he chews it up and spits it out, the meal is over.  If he fusses, a quiet "I guess you're not hungry today" is all that is necessary, and you let him down from the table. Do NOT make a fuss, or beg or bribe or threaten.

He won't starve himself.  If he's hungry enough, he'll learn that there are other *good* foods in the world.

  9. Hide the veggies in the pizza. That's what my parents had to do with me. Also put some fruits (strawberries, blue berries, bananas, etc.) in his oatmeal! It works great. Good luck!
