  2. Bettas are labyrinth fishes.  They have a special organ that lets them breathe oxygen from air, which is where they get the distinction labyrinth fishes.  The natural habitat of bettas is shallow, slow moving water--they  are commercially raised in rice paddies.  Bettas do not need air pumps or water filters to be healthy.  But they are affected by changes in their environment, and changes should be made carefully.  Be sure not to add water that is a different temperature than the fish's water, clean everything that goes into the fish tank (NO soap!  Aquarium salt is a disinfectant--follow package directions). When you add water to your fish's tank try not to disturb the gravel, if you have gravel.  Kicking up waste particles can clog the fish's gills and make it difficult for him to get oxygen from the water or the surface.   If your fish ONLY spends time at the surface, take a closer look at the fish himself.  If his gill coverings are splayed out, he may have gill disease.  If his scales do not lay smoothly down on his body, but are raised, he may have dropsy.  Dropsy is very serious in fish, and few recover from it.  If he stops eating, or keeps his fins closed all the time, these are signs that he is sick.  All in all, know your pet.  Note any changes in behavior, and check with an aquarist when you notice anything out of the ordinary.  Make changes slowly, don't overfeed, and provide your fish with an appropriate environment.

  3. you need an airpump hes gulping air in his body. also hes not going to die.

  5. Calm down. All caps make it look like you're panicking. There are lots of things to consider here. When you say you added tons of new stuff, what kind of new stuff? Do you think that has something to do with his changed behavior? If so, take it out. How big is his tank/bowl? If it is very small without much room to swim and it is filled up with "tons of new stuff," maybe he doesn't have room to do much else besides float at the top. Bettas don't get their oxygen from the water, they breathe air from the surface, so that is not abnormal behavior. A water change won't hurt a fish unless you don't dechlorinate it or you spill some kind of chemical in it. You really don't give enough information for anyone to tell you anything about the state of your fish, so unless he hasn't moved for several hours, from the little information you give, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong.
