Question:

Help! My cable-modem and TV are having problems!?

I have Cox Cable and last time they checked, they said it was "good enough"...I'm having about 7% loss pinging Google (it's <1% loss to my modem) and my uploads/downloads are sometimes corupt - for example my website updates all the JPEGs are corrupt (no permissions, invalid when re-downloaded)

Any suggestions? I re-arranged the wires so I only have 1 splitter (3.5db loss) between the main feed and my modem...but I don't have any surge protection that way...this gives me (right this moment) -9.9dBmv downstream / 48.5dBmv upstream

How it's normally connected, I have 2 splitters (3.5db loss each) and a surge protector inbetween the main feed and my modem. This gives -14.8 dBmv downstream/52.6dBmv upstream.

Also, the main feed comes up to the faceplate (it's an old house) but the crimp fitting can be easily pulled off/pressed in on the back. I think it needs replacing but Cox says it shouldn't matter as long as it stays pushed up.

I don't know how to identify whether it's RG6 or RG6Quad cable so I can't get a connector at the hardware store...it doesn't have any printing on the cable jacket where I can see.

 1. i would take the surge protector out of the cable system, seen plenty of them cause problems and if your install was done right the cable is grounded outside. as far as the fitting goes for the old line, you can squeeze rg6 fittings on rg6 quad, its not always easy, but can be done. Most modems would would fine for "normal" use with those upstream and downstream levels....... not what a lot of cable companies would like, but in real world that should work. you can also try a tracert to see where the problems are at. good luck.
