Three questions! Please answer!!!!! I need them quick!

1. I just got a new comet goldfish to be friends with my other comet goldfish and they are rubbing on each other and wont leave each others side for the past 3 minutes! Are they breeding or meeting each other? Or what?

Thanks!!!

2. My new comet goldfish is opening her mouth a lot and big, is this normal or is she having trouble breathing?

3. I put dechlorinator in there bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes but on the bottle it says you dont have to let it sit. Is this okay? Should I add more while the fish are in them? Does this have anything to do with the opening of the mouth of my new fish? (My other comet isnt opening his mouth nearly as much)

Thanks soooo much for answering!!!! First answer with answers to all my questions gets best answer!!!

:)

  1. your fish may be mating and if ur fish is opning its mouth its not becuase its having trouble breathing fish breath through ther gills not lungs

  2. Goldfish need pumpers, they need air. So get her a air pumper, she will be ok if you get her a air pumper and remember to treat the water before you put the fish in. and DO NOT USE BOWLS for goldfish! They are VERY BAD! Lack of oxegan and space ! To properly care for them get a tank, about 5 -10 gallons or a squared tank that will give your goldfish enough room to move and breath!!!!. You can get them for cheap look around, make sure they have rocks and plants in them and an AIR PUMP! Thats why tour goldfish is gasping! Good Luck! I hope this helps.

  3. 1. If one fish is nudging the other's vent (the hole they poo from) then you probably have one male and one female. If they're just nudging each other, watch them closely: fish can harm each other when they get too rowdy. I have had one lose an eye to an aggressive newcomer.

    2. this is not normal. if she looks like she is yawning, she may have parasites in her gills called flukes. if she looks like she is breathing rapidly, she is not getting enough oxygen. she needs an airstone (AKA bubbler, aerator) in the tank. this can also be a sign that the ammonia in the tank is too high. I would do a water change just in case.

    3. it doesn't matter if you let it sit. be careful to get the right dose of dechlor in your tank: too much is also dangerous because while the dechlor is binding the chlorine, oxygen is being used, which means less oxygen for your fish.

I really hope you get a proper tank and not a bowl for your fish. They will not live for long in a bowl.

when you have a moment, you should do some research. here are some excellent sites:

www.thegab.org (when your moderators are vet techs you're in good hands)

    www.koivet.com (likewise)

    kokosgoldfish.com (decent)

    fishgeeks.com

    and google.com is your friend.

  4. 1.  Unless your fish are several years old and five to six inches long, they are probably not breeding.  To get goldfish to breed you need to give them nourishing food such as worms, fruit flies, brine shrimp and similar foods.  The males develop tubercles on the face prior to breeding.

    2.  If you have two goldfish in a bowl, it is likely to be deficient in oxygen.  Goldfish do best in a larger aquarium with good filtration.  They like to eat and after eating, deposit strings of waste in the water!  If your fish are gulping surface water, they are sucking in the water that has the highest concentration of oxygen.

    3.  Make sure to replace the dechlorinator regularly.  It does breakdown as it ages.  Follow the directions on the bottle for proper treatment of the water.  If you continue to use the bowl for your fish, it would be a good idea to have a clean bottle of treated water available for the water changes that will be necessary to keep the water clean.  If you clean the bowl don't use any dish soap as the residues of soap can damage the delicate gills of the fish.

  5. 1. You’ll know your goldfish are ready to spawn when their colors intensify. if they are pushing on each other its very possible that they may be mating, or ready to mate. If the tank is too small they wont mate though.

    2. Its normal for fish to have their mouths open over a long period of time.

This may be because they may have a rock or something stuck in their gill. Check just to make sure.

    3. I doubt it has to do with the fish mouth being open. but when adding it make sure you take the fish out, because some products can harm them. although im sure if you don't have the dechlorinator let it sit, it doesnt really matter.

  6. 1. Goldfish are social fish and they are simply getting to know each other.. as friends lol

    2. They are all having trouble breathing.

    3. A bowl. That's probably the worst thing you could do to your fish.

Some countries have banned the sale of bowls due to the risk of stunting, suffocation and ammonia/nitrite poisoning in such a small environment

One goldfish needs 20 very well filtered and oxygenated gallons. Plus 10 gallons for every other goldfish. So 4 goldfish=  50 gallons.

You would need an air pump, and a very strong filter or two.

Good luck and sorry if I sounded a little harsh

  7. It is okay to let the dechlorinator sit. Goldfish sometimes rub when fighting or meeting. It is difficult to determine which, so don't interfere with it. Do not add dechlorintor while they are still in the bowl. I also suggest, in addition to dechlorinator, using the product NovAqua, it is very good for fish and preventing disease. As for opening the mouth, this may signify she is not getting enough air, so you should buy an aerator for your bowl. Even if that is not why she is opening her mouth, it is still good to have one.

  8. Short answers:

    1)  Just meeting.  Breeding goldfish in aquariums isn't easy.

    2)  She may be adjusting to the water temp. and chemistry.  It's hard to say without seeing her.

    3)  It's fine.  With ANY medicine or chemical, you follow all of the directions to the letter.  You did fine.

    (Long answer)

Goldfish need lots of space.  With 2 you shouldn't have anything smaller than 35 gallons.  50 is better.

    Why?

Goldfish are messy.  They give off a lot of p**p and pee and they need lots of water or they poison themselves.  EVEN WITH a filter and an air stone!

Goldfish get huge.  Those little comets could get to be 12 inches long.

Goldfish live a long time (up to 30 years!).  How would you like to live in a house the size of your bedroom closet?  Complete with your kitchen and toilet?

Don't put any other fish in with goldfish.

    Why?

Their p**p and pee is harmful to other fish.

Goldfish need cold water and tropical fish need warmer water than goldfish are comfortable in.

    Don't believe me?
