Question:

Help! My freezer keeps frosting up within 2 weeks of defrosting it. What can I do?

I live in Mexico, so I suspect that the GE fridge that I have is not made quite as well as they are in the states and elsewhere.

Sometimes the freezer works extra (everything really frozen) and the fridge is too warm and vice versa. I try to completely dry out the unit when defrosting (as I found that one of the problems was trapped ice in between the fridge and freezer, keeping the fridge from reaching a cool enough temperature).

I am so tired of wasting money and losing food. Anyone have any suggestions? I am really hesitant to call a refrigerator repairman, because of their notoriety even in the US for ripping people off.

My husband and I still have about 2 years left to spend here, so I would like to make the appliance last until we leave.

  1. Replace the door seal its leaking.

  2. Frost in your freezer comes from moisture.

A- Try to not open and close the door any more than you have to. eg. get everything out of the fridge once or twice a day. don't open and close the door 30-40 times a day

B- OR, the door seal isn't working properly, this is allowing hot moist air into the freezer and then freezing the water causeing ice build up.

There are only two solutions for this; 1 force the door tighter(tie it shut) 2 relpace the gasket around the door

    Hope this helps

  3. just get a new fridge ones ge fridge have problem like that they never work right

  4. I'm surprised that there isn't a separate temperature control for both the Fridge and the Freezer.  There should be a temperature where you can set the Freezer so that it doesn't freeze up and another thermostat setting for the Fridge.  If you don't have that, you will spend more money on repairs and food than buying a new R/F that has the separate setting controls.

    Good Luck

  5. Keep your freezer door closed as much as possible, don't hold the freezer door open any longer than necessary, and if needed replace the rubber gasket around the door.  It's outside air getting into the freezer that causes the frost.

  6. I am having the same issue with my 2 year old Maytag.

    I found a website called www.repairclinic.com

They have a great trouble shooting section and you can even e-mail them with questions about your specific make and model. I found out that what we are experiencing is a defrost problem. There are 3 main parts that could be bad.

    1. Defrost timer

    2. Adaptive defrost control board

    3. Defrost heater

Repair clinic.com can tell if it is possible to manually trigger the defrost mode so that you can rule out the defrost heater.

I have ordered parts 1 and 2 and still have about a week to wait. Both parts for under 50 bucks. They responded to my questions in about 5 days with part numbers and diagrams of where they are located in my unit. If your a do it yourself kinda person you should have no problem fixing it on your own.

Where do you live in Mexico, my wife's dad lives in Los Barriles on the East Cape of Baja.Excellent fishing down there. His name is Don. Look him up if you are any where near there, he can fix anything.

  7. Fix the seal.

    Vacuum the coils.

If that doesn't work, look for a place that will sell you the repair manual, buy the parts and do it yourself.

  8. We had the same problem ... pull the fridge all the way out and clean the coils out, there maybe to much dust or dirt in there, if that  doesn't work....remove the plastic piece between the fridge and freezer its against the back wall of the freeze to allow more air to pass through...If that still doesn't work put the things that shouldn't freeze like Vegetables in the middle and the other things on the side just in case it does freeze , But in the end we had to buy a new fridge
