I recently rescued a hermit crab from a pet shop. We brought him home and since all we had was a 1 gallon aquarium at the time we fixed him up in that until we could buy him a 10 gallon tank. About two days after we got home ants got in the tank. We immedieately removed Hermie ( the crab) and went and bought him the ten gallon tank with a lid. He has food, water, water to bathe in, things to crawl on and new shells to go in, but he doesn't do anything.. he just sits under a piece of bark all day and night not eating. This has been going on for two days now and i can't seem to get him to perk up. The tank is on a the kitchen table should i move him to a less populated area? i'm new at this and i really don't want him to die. What should i do?

  1. I think he may be lonely. Hermit crabs don't like to be alone. You should get another one. Also, you should tempt him with slices of fruit, and fresh vegtables. But it's probably because he's lonely.

  2. ok so i have had 4 hermit crabs and and two died because they where from the fair

warning!! never ever ever win games at the fair where the give u hermit crabs! they die about a week after

anyways hemit crabs... as far as i know like to eat at night so the little guy is probably eating at night while ur asleep

i am soo happy u rescued him from the ants cuz ant love hermit crabs.

also he might not be eating cuz hes depressed

a VERY BIG reason he could be depressed is that hes alone

you see hermit crabs traval  and live in hundreds and hundreds its impossble for a hermit crab to survive alone my advise to you is get atleast two more but put them in care fully meaning hurmit crabs dont always get along so put the new one in that 1 gallon tank for about two to 3 days and have the hermit crabs visit each other outside of the tanks maybe when ur giving them a bath that way they dont kill each other over their teratory. keep doing these visits untill ur sure that they are happily compatible with each other then start puting th new crab in for a whole day if every thing goes well keep him there but obsrve him accationaly. this is something you HAVE to do or your hermit crab will die. so please get him some buddys evan if you do solve hes eating problem. also im sure u already have this but make sure you have a heater and you spray the tank every day!

please e mail me! i want to help!!

  3. Well hermit crabs are nocturnal so he could be moving at night. In addition he was put under major stress, being moved from the pet store, then the ants, then a new tank. He is most likely just trying to adjust. Give him time and mist him daily with water. Not dripping wet just a light mist. Best of luck.

  4. Sounds like your doing everything right, I know they do better in pairs. Have you given him pellets, and vegies or fruit? Also his tank should be warm with humidity.
