I just got this house one month ago. Today, all of the sudden, wham, a potent boiled eggs smell emanating from the sewer drain in the garage (I think). I poured bleach in it, which tamed it enough for me to sleep tonight. What do I do? What is the problem?

  1. Sewer drain in garage????  Sounds more like a storm water drain.  You probably have a dead rat in it.

  2. It is of course due to chocked drainage problem. Have it flushed out.

  3. Dump a bucket of water in it every week or two. Your trap went dry.

  4. pour a gallon of water in the drain. the p-trap may have dried out and methane gas is backing up. not uncommon for an unused trap to dry out.

  5. The trap may have simply dried out, there has to be water in there to block the sewer gases, but if you don't have occasion to use it very often, it will evaporate.

Bleach is good, but you may just need to flush some water in there every few weeks, or when you notice any smells.

If this works but not for very long, the trap under the floor could be leaking, and the fix for that could be tricky to say the least.
