My family and I just moved into an in-law, and the place stinks. I've already rented a carpet cleaner and cleaned the rug, cleaned the bathroom and the kitchen, and i bought some glade plug ins, and i spray fabreeze every morning before we leave, but when we get back home, it smells like, hmmmm. mold? or wet carpet? i really can't explain how it smells like, but i would like for this to permanently go away! any one have any advice on this?

  1. sure, your carpets are wet all the time that's why the smell is there--take off carpets, and replace them with tiles

  2. try a dehumidifier if you suspect that it is a moisture problem.  i too was plagued with stinky house syndrome, even after cleaning.  the solution was simple: pour 2 cups of bleach down the drains.  stink was gone.

  3. Sounds like a water leak somwhere you should take a look around and I bet you will find your smell.

  4. Is the place somewhat below ground level?  Does the floor sit on wood or concrete?  You might want to pull back the carpeting and see what is below.  It could also be the sewer line for the toilet that is a huge problem.  Try sealing off the bathroom door placing towels underneath the door when you go out to make sure it is sealed.  Then see when you return how the smell is.

    Feel for you!

  5. You may need to call a professional just find out what the smell is.

did you hang your own drapes, if not check the hem to see if something has been put in there.

    Just for a good laugh..

Ever heard of the ex wife who wanted to keep her house but the husband wanted it also. She sewed shrimp inside the hem of the drapes and let him and his new wife move in the house. Wasn't too long before he was willing to sell it for almost nothing just to get rid of it as he couldn't get rid of the smell. Ex wife bought it took down the drapes and now has the house she wanted in the first place.

  6. I would run a dehumidifier and a air purifier, and try to find where the smell is, if it;s old wet carpet , then you need to replace it. If some where leaks, then you need to find out where.

If the garbage dispenser sticks from kitchen, you need to freeze few vinegar ice cubes and let it sit in the pipe for while.

Put bleach in for while if the toilet sticks.

  7. While you are waiting to get your carpet clean, can you keep your windows open through out the day?

Also, while you are home, candles might help some

  8. By the way you described the smell, there might be a leak somewhere in the plumbing or roof or something. Have someone check it out. If there isn't a leak try replacing the carpets, window coverings, or anything else that might stink. Maby a fresh coat of paint on the inside might help.

    Good Luck.
