We got her 4 days ago and when we got her i didnt notice any redness, but since that day it has appeared and seems to be getting worse. (its been red for about 3 days - maybe 4) She is very shy and but will come out of her hut if i coax her with a bit of yogurt. Besides her shyness and red nose she seems to be fine. She eats, drinks and plays with the other rat at times. but when we go near she hides back in hut. Please help. I was hopeing the red would go away but now im getting very worried

Thanks

  1. She probably has an infection rats produce red liquid out of there nose..  It's called Porphyrin. red mucus that is produced by a gland            By the way your rat will become used to you after a few weeks, let her out and get her used to you ( your touch, smell etc) Rats make really really lovable pets. despite what you have heard.

this should help you with your problem, I suggest you take her to a vet.

  2. it will just be the change of environment she needs time to a just. rats "snot" is red (porphyrin) they produce lots of it when stressed (moving home) or when they have infections. just keep a eye on her if she goes wheezy take her to the vets if not then shes proberbly a lil bit stressed just leave her to settle in

  3. try a pet shop they may know wts wrong with her or just go to a vet they will know

  4. The stress of being in a new environment can cause that. If it doesn't stop in a couple days, or gets worse, you may want to bring her to a vet. If you have an old t-shirt, something with your scent on it, put a piece of it in her cage. It will help her get used to you a little quicker.

  5. Sometimes when rats are stressed out they tend to get a runny nose and sneezing. Their snot is called porphyrin which is the caked "red stuff" you see. Hold your girl up close to your ear to make sure you don't here her wheeze at all. If she is wheezing she more than likely has some type of upper respiratory disease and needs to see a vet quickly.
