Alright everyone - oh and hi- I need a lil' bit of help!

You see, in my story I am unsure whether to make real cities or fake cities! Any advice?

Also, if I made fake cites, could I put them in a real country or state?

Thanks!

  1. Real Cities: Real cities are good because the reader may be in that city and could relate to the story and understand it. But you need to do your research. This same reader could read an incorrect fact about the city, for example where a certain building is or where a road is not, and get mad and put down the book

Fiction: Fiction cities are great because you can shape them to your desires. The other side is you can't get too wacky because then It'll just be dumb. Keep it realistic but creative

  2. Write about what you know.  You can use your city as a background, readers like being able to follow along with the story, it makes it more personal for them.  If you use made-up places, and put them into real areas, you can still get a little natural terrain into the story and get the reader involved.

  3. u should put in fake cities becuase that way u could imgain and it will becocme very creative and it will be awsome. when u r done turn it in to a book. good luck. and yeah if ur faking the cities then u should make up a country or state. best of luck and plz vote me for best answer i really need it. :P

  4. fake city-real country or state.

it gets really complicated when you start to use real ones. and i'm starting to see that now.

for mine, i'm changing it to a fake city i'm gonna make up.

that way, you can make up roads, locations, schools, etc.

save yourself the trouble and make it all up :)

  5. Well if you make a fake city you have more creative liscense. It might be a good idea to base it on a real city so that you have images and maps to base the... basics on.

I personally use real places because I can never come up with any names for fake places on my own that don't sound cheesy. Good luck!

  6. well fake cities are fun because they can be anything, they can be clean or ghetto or new york sized or whatever you'd like. Gotham isn't real but it's a big deal in the Batman world. The best thing about fake cities is they can be where ever you like or in any state. Whatever you want because it's a book!

  7. Fake city, real country.

For example, "The Foursome" by John P. Spooner. Set in the fictional town of Brookwood, in the real state of Massachusetts.

  8. u can use real or fake, whatever makes u feel better.  if the story is that of a harry potter theme, make up your own locations.  if not, then stick to what u know so u can set the climate and stuff easier without a whole lot of research.

  9. I honestly doesn't make sense to do a fake city and a real country. In my opinion, you should choose one or the other. In a fake city it can be entirely yours and no one else's. That's what captures many authors today. They can make up a currency of money, a culture, a common likeness in the residents, anything.

In a real city, it is easy for readers to relate easier. But, it may also be boring because people are so used to what they are reading that is in their everyday life.

I would suggest combining both. You can start off the story in a regular land, and somehow the character ends up in a fantasy land.

    Hope this helped.
