  1. Those DVD authoring applications are doing their job. A single layer DVD that is expected to play back on a regular DVD player connected to a TV can only hold 120 minute (2 hours) of video. At 4.7 gig of storage space, if the video is compressed any more, the video quality will start to get bad.

    If you are feeding double layer DVDs into your optical drive, it may only be capable of burning single layer  - so it ignores that there is a second layer available... If the optical drive CAN burn double layer discs, the 8.5 gig storage space will allow up to 240 minutes of DVD quality video storage.

    If your hardware can actually handle using the double layer discs, you have to tell the application that is what you are using. Read the appropriate manual for the application you are using.
