Hi. Just got a DG834GT Netgear router. I connected the phone line into the back of it. The power cable was on. And an ethernet cable syncing it and the pc.

I got the power light, port light and the internet light staying green on. And when i go to internet connections it says connected. But it doesn't say Netgear router anywhere at all. And when i try to browse pages nothing happens. Despite it saying connected. ANy ideas?

  1. Was the computer on when you did all the connections?  If so you may just need to release and renew the IP for the computer!  Its usually better to power on the system as follows, Modem first, then router wait for it to boot, then once the router is on, turn on computers.  You can try the renew IP or Repair connection on your computer. Right Click on the Network connection, click the Support tab, click the "Repair" button.

PS - I doubt your computer will show Netgear anywhere.. its just a network connection.

  2. Hi there

I assume that you are HARD WIRED to this wireless router. You cannot do an initial set up wirelessly.

Routers have there own way of identifying themselves to a computer. This is called a local area network (LAN) internet protocol (IP) address.

If your computer has been manually set to a specific address, and the router is set for another address, the computer may detect that its connected, but cannot use the internet connection.

If you had a previous router that required an installer disk to set it up, this may have changed your computer's default setting to connect automatically. You will have to change them back to automatic.

I recommend that you check that your computer is set to automatically accept an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router address. Once it is, follow the set up instructions in the Netgear Users Guide, or contact their support team for assistance.

Last, before you switch over to wireless, make sure you have set up your WPA security features in the router.

    Hope this helps.

    Gary
